Tiger, Popeye -- And Where Are They Now?
Published: 6/14/2008 10:41 AM
Last Modified: 6/14/2008 10:41 AM

1, Tiger Woods made his first double bogey of the year in the first round of the U.S. Open. Are you kidding? It's June. He didn't make a bogey in the first five months of the year? The rest of the human race took a double-bogey in the first round of golf we played this year -- maybe even the first hole.
2, All you need to know about why the Lakers are down 3-1 in the NBA Finals is that former OSU player Brian Montonati, during a radio interview the other day, said Pau Gasol is "softer than butter." But it's not just Gasol that's soft. It takes a whole team to be soft in order to achieve the feat of giving up a 24-point lead in an NBA Finals game.
3, Defending U.S. Open champ Angel Cabrera minus cigarettes? It's like Popeye minus spinach.
4, Texas' athletic budget, according to the Austin paper, is expected to be $125 million. How about taking half of that and building a traffic loop around one of the most congested cities in America.
5, I'm teaming up with World staffer Bill Haisten for a "where are they now package" of famous and quirky sports figures from our state. I need some reader help on tracking down a few of these people, including former TU running back Mark Brus, former high school basketball phenom Stephanie McGhee and former OSU football player Joel Fry. If you know where to track these folks down (or if you have any where-are-the-now requests), please respond to this blog.

Where is TU basketball player Craig Hernandi or Rafael Maldonado?

You should look for quality, though quiet, guys like Clint McDaniel, former Edison Middle School, Booker T and Razorback basketball player who helped the Hogs win the national championship. I spoke with Nolan about a year ago at the airport and Clint was living in Kansas City and now married, I believe. What about Archie Marshall, former Edison Eagle under John Phillips who blew out his knee while at KU? Of course, there is Edison's former Billy Goldberg and Jenks' former Steve Hale who player at UNC, correct? If you want to go the Roughnecks route, you could look for guys like Victor Moreland (I think he is still in Tulsa), Alex Skatorek (former player and GM), Billy Casky, Jimmy Kelly, Njego Pesa, Laurie Abrams, Ron Futcher, Winston DuBose, Gene Duchateau, Zelko Beleki, former GM Noel lemons, former player and asst Alan Woodward, Iraj Danifard and the forward who I believe wore #2 and they called the Iceman, can't recall his name. I think it started with an E. Other fan favs at schools like Arkansas or OSU where the fans always wanted them put in at the end of a game would be Scott Rose at Ark (who eventually earned a schooly) and OSU guys like Jason Turk and John Philpott. Even funny looking guys like Ian Philips or Sean Pell at OSU. Great name alert: Binky Triplet. What about guys whose careers revolve around sports, like Krazy George? Oh, not from OK, but his Manager is. What about Dougie Lawrence, former Oiler?

I believe Alan Dugdale may have been the Iceman. Plus, don't forget the ROughnecks first ever draft choice, Billy Gazonas and another great one later, Joe Morrone. Jr.

By the way, Jimmie, wouldn't it be nice to have a 25 year anniversary article on the state's ONLY true first level professional sports championship, the 1983 Soccer Bowl?

The "Big Hernasty" as we affectionately called Craig Hernadi still makes random appearances around Tulsa, enough to make me think he is still residing in the area!

Good suggestions! Even if we don't get to all of them this year, maybe we can make "where are they now" an annual deal and locate some of them next year.

Wow, Jeff! Your post brings up some memories of some great times! I had forgotten a lot of those names. I was playing soccer in high school at the time and went to all the home games. I even got to play on an indoor team with Iraj Daniarard once. I would love to see a 25-year anniversary article about the Roughnecks!
Joel's Brother (5 years ago)
If you find him tell him he still owes me a pair of binocular glasses that he took to school and got stolen from his desk in the third grade. If he does not replace them, I will be forced to submit a list of his childhood nicknames and the location of his small mole-like birthmark.
