Time to Pay the Players

The five coaches at Big 12 Media Day on Monday seemed to be in support of some type of payment to players if the issue can be clearly defined.

No one had a definite idea about how much or how often players should be paid.

However, the coaches seem to acknowledge there is a need among their players.

Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy said he knows there is plenty of money in college football these days to find some for the players.

He thinks if an amount could be determined by the NCAA then he believes paying the players is a good idea.

“I just know there is a need out there,” he said.

It isn’t likely to happen any time in the near future. It is unclear if all athletes, or just football players, would get payments. How much and how often would have to be clarified.

Still, this is an issue that won’t go away.

It is probably time for the NCAA to take up the issue, discuss it and see if there is enough support to start sending out checks to players.

Actually, it should be.."time to pay them more." In the 70's OU's Randy Hughes unabashadley explained to me how OU "supporters" "bought" the tickets allotted to players at high dollar prices and how players "worked" for car dealers w/o actually having to "work." Enough of the farce! Pay them 1/10 of the minimum NFL rookie wage and get it over with for God's sake.

all the big schools that make a lot of money might be able to pay players, but what about the majority of all the football programs, the schools who don't have those budgets? where would you draw the line? who pays and who doesn't? some schools hardly break even at all on sports. could they afford this? or would they have to give up football if they can't afford to pay players?...b2r
