Let's see what the weekend brought...
Who's coming: LaColtan Bester
He's a wide receiver whose East Mississippi Lions win the national junior college football championship last year. They beat Arizona Western in something called the El Toro Bowl, and Bester scored two touchdowns to help stake his team to a 27-0 lead (East Miss eventually won 55-47).
Bester ranked third among JUCOs going into the El Toro with 69 catches and 980 yards. He ranked second with 15 touchdowns before adding two more in the championship.
He's 6-3 and 205 pounds, apparently. That's very interesting, since Scout once listed him at 6-0½ , 177-pounds as a Class of 2010 prospect at Kemper County High School in DeKalb, Miss. Back then, Bester was a quarterback. He was also a basketball player.
Unlike Jalen Saunders, the Fresno State transfer who OU officially picked up last week, Bester can help this year. He committed over the weekend, but to play in 2012, not 2013.
Weird, I know, for a receiver of Bester's credentials to still be available so late in the recruiting game. But the Sooners will take it. Or him, rather.
Who's going: Nobody. At least, nobody officially left this weekend. Although I suppose I could have missed a tweet from Kameel Jackson, Jaz Reynolds or Trey Franks. Please let me know if I did.
Pretty please.
What it means: The Sooners already had freshman wideouts Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Derrick Woods coming in. They're hoping JUCO star Courtney Gardner makes it as well (school work… you know how that can be).
I assume a late addition like Bester isn't a sign that everything's going to be fine with Jackson, Reynolds and Franks. That or it isn't a terrific sign Gardner is going to qualify. Or it's a sign of both.
I figure it's not a sign of neither.
Fun fact: Near as I can tell, Bester could be the first Mississippian to play football for the Sooners since Dwayne Chandler, a fullback from the early 90s. Hope I didn't miss anyone obvious since then. Please let me know if I did.
Pretty please.
Also: Near as I can tell, there has never been anyone in the state of Oklahoma – football player for OU or anyone who's ever done anything else – named LaColtan Bester.
