Top Ten
Published: 8/4/2008 3:33 PM
Last Modified: 8/4/2008 3:33 PM

Here is a preliminary top ten.

1. USC.

2. Florida.

3. LSU.

4. OU.

5. Georgia.

6. Auburn.

7. Tennessee.

8. Alabama.

9. South Carolina.

10. Tie: Missouri.

10. Ohio State.

Worst conference: Big Ten.

Proof: Missouri 55, Illinois 35.

Trendy junk: Clemson, Texas Tech, USF, BYU.

Dumb handicapping: Picking a team to have a high ranking because of an easy schedule.

Easy scheduling made Kansas State what it is today.

Nothing.

Easy scheduling is what a habitual loser does to pull itself from the pits, nothing wrong there. But once decent, you have to act decent.

Nobody ever has or ever will schedule itself to a national championship.

Bonus OU play-by-play impression: He's at the Chatasee Tennanooga twenty, he's at the thirty, check that, he's at the Oklahoma twenty, check that, he's out of bounds, check that, he's at the ten, the five, check your coat, check your hat, check your worries at the doorstep, touchdown Oklahoma!

Wow, your impression is so good, its scary. How can anyone possibly be as bad as OU's play by play man?
At least, you would be funny to listen to while botching the call.

Thanks for the laugh picker!
Arthur (5 years ago)
Picker,

I really am surprised that you have OU over Georgia. Also, you might be right but picking USC number one with a largely unproven quarterback at the helm seems risky. Florida seems to be a pretty solid top-five pick. Any team returning a Heisman winner should be excited about their chances.

I would have to agree that Texas Tech is incredibly overrated. I really don't see Tech as being that much better than OSU. Tech still has a defense that has yet to really stop anyone.
Eric (5 years ago)
Oh poor Bob Barry......ha.....that was the hardest I laghed all day!
SBH (5 years ago)
Love the Bob Barry impression. He is easily the worst play by play guy in the state, if not nation. I think he has pictures of Castiglione and Boren in bed together. That would be the only explanation as to how he is still employed as OU's play by play. Maybe we can downgrade and get dean blevins to do color?

Bama & S. Carolina will “Tank” again!

Other “Potential Top 10’s” Oregon, Wisconsin, Clemson, & “gulp” N. Carolina? Also, don’t forget, the Big “Least” has to have one of their own. The East Coast BIAS Press demands it!

Though TTech has yet 2 prove its BCS status, their schedule is set up 2 start the season 8-0 (Won @ A&M the last 2 visits) Before the 1st “Biggie” @ home vs. Texas.

Kansas (Returns QB & most of their “D”) & Colorado (something like 17 starters back w/ the additional freshman running back sensation) could “burst” Mizzu’s bubble! Plus, Mizzo opens Big 12 play @ hated rival Nebraska (who could also B 4-0 @ that point)

How many Big 12 teams will go undefeated out of conference? @ least four in the South (OU, OSU, Texas, & TTech) have a great chance 2 do so.

Is this a yr a non BCS conference team goes undefeated but can’t get enough “points” 2 qualify 4 a BCS game (ala…Boise St., Utah, &/or TU)?

What’s the sentiment for keeping Bob Barry on play by play? A Good & Entertaining Radio broadcast of the game can provide a huge upsurge in support & fan interest. But I’ll take “Stumbling, stammering” Berry over (Deno & any other O “Phew” homer)

What about OSU faithful Hun “sing praises 2 OSU”. He sounds like someone has “spilled” a hot cup of coffee on his pants for ALL 4 quarters. Get a towel!

Someone had too much Redbull this morning...

Wow.

OU # 4? Begs the question of just how great a team West Va must have been. I seem to remember them winning every facet of the game including the embarrassing sight of lumbering back beating OU's allegedly "quick" cornerbacks a long way down the field. Maybe no Big 12 team deserves to be considered in the top 10. Is there a soul in the country who believes Texas will win out? This is not a great football conf any more, closer to Big 10.
World Picker (5 years ago)
Nit Picker, what are you clicking, your tin cup on the cell bars?

NOYL, doesn't a pinhead coach Clemson? Doesn't Wisconsin average about four points a game? Michigan looks like the sleeper in that league, because the coach is pretty rough.

Tom, it isn't that West Va is so hot, it's just that Venables can't figure out how to stop a scrambling quarterback.

SBH, the Dean suggestion was a joke, we all pray.

Many OU fans should get a good dose of check-that announcing, as the first game is only on pay per view.

USC puts ten in the NFL first round, the assumption is any old body could play decent qb.

The first pick of the year: Georgia is a joke.

Tip: Cincy has a nice D and could play OU tough.

Pro stuff: OU receiver Kelley could be in trouble when it comes to making the Redskins. The Hawaii qb has a nice wing.

Is Green Bay nuts? So what if Favre is goofy. They're all goofy. He's fifty times better than the other scrub. Play him or disgrace yourselves.

Larry Still (5 years ago)
Bob Barry is an embarrassment.

It is painful to listen. Lots of fans like to watch their teams on TV and listen to the radio for the home cookin' announcers, but OU fans don't have that option.

Bring back John Brooks!

Now there's a guy who knew how to call a game.
World Picker (5 years ago)
Larry, and others: It must be that he's been there so long, he gets to call the exit shot. It's like Vin Scully without all the accuracy, habit, check that, tradition.

You'd think that because OU is on TV so much, radio wouldn't matter. But it's like somebody said, lots of people in the stands like to listen to the local voice as a part of the whole colorful experience.

World Picker (5 years ago)
What about Merv? He seems fine.

What about Squeaky at OSU?

Bruce Howard at TU is the best of the lot.

Nit Picker (5 years ago)
World Picker:

Glad to see you finally caved under the pressure of my posts, you lightweight.
But as you say "pre-season" is meaningless.
You of course will have the courage to update it each week of the season. Yeah, right. Fer sure. Absolutely. I predict it, in fact.

Now, it is time you did the same with your qb picks. I predict you will do so. It's a lock.

As for your cheap shots at Bob Berry, well, we all know your lack of character from prior rants.
Just asking, but if he is so bad, why do you, WP, listen to him? Doesn't your black and white analog have audio?
Even I have audio.

There has to be some reason radio media and television media have twisted the TW into a giant piece of bad origami art.
Particularly since it is hard to imagine a bar being set any lower.

As for your other drivel:
Cincy does have a good team and OU is fortunate the game is in Norman. The Bearcats will come to play.

Seven SEC teams in your Top 10 = Homer
The Pac 10 has owned the SEC this decade.
Now, that is real handicapping you lightweight homer.

USC is top dog until someone can knock them off. Even T-Bone could have picked them #1.

Pro Stuff:
Favre realizes he must pay for his own pain pills in retirement -wants to get reinstated - World Picker calls it sad, jumps off his bandwagon.
Favre gets reinstated. World Picker jumps back on his wagon.
Conclusion: Pain pill price rises in Tulsa; B. Favre becomes WP's pain pill dealer.

M. Kelly injured week before last, out for weeks.
WP reports he might not make team-but doesn't report why.
Conclusion: WP is a bigot. Oops. Old news.

Chris (5 years ago)
Nit Picker,

Are you writing for the Daily Oklahoman? Mr. Monday came out with his first article this week.

It reminded me alot of you.
SBH (5 years ago)
NIT Picker, They aren't cheap shots if they suck. If OU is such a great top notch program, they deserve top notch announcer not a barnyard auctioneer. Even OU deserves someone better than Blevins and Barry.

As obsessed as this state is with sports, they need people with insightful true, commentary not idiots with 9/11 premonitions and homers like Blevins.

Without a doubt, Bruce Howard is the best of the bunch. It isn't even close.

He owes me money and won't pay.

Everybody knows what that makes him.

After the pickers rant about how important QB are in college football. His top ten makes no sense??

USC-QB looked shaky in a couple of starts last year. May have lost the Oregon game for them
Florida-Best college QB in the country
LSU-Starting a transfer from Harvard, I am going to say this again, starting a transfer from Harvard in the SEC!! They may be the 3rd best team in their division but not the country
OU-solid at #4
UGA-should be right behind USC and Florida Although I think they will be in the national title game.
Auburn-New spread offense. Jury still out but should win the west.
Vols-New QB, New offense coordinator and a big pumpkin as a coach 15-20 is a better fit
Tide-The QB is better known for playing at Hoover High (The Jenks of the Southeast) then beating SEC teams plus this team laid down last year. Still a year away
South Carolina-The QB spent more time in jail then the practice field.

Nitpicker, Pac Ten owns the SEC?? They do not even play enough to make that statement. Idiot..

Kevin, yeah, USC looked weak putting ten in the pros first round; with more than that projected this year. Name the last year when a USC quarterback ran around like some little high-schooler. It is a pro offense out there, plug in another quarterback.

The SEC is light years the best conference.

The SEC champ with two losses would be favored over the Big 10 or Big 12 or Big East champ with one loss.

Nit Picker (5 years ago)
Kevin "Hotty Toddy"2 (to the second power)

Are you living in World Picker's basement?

Reading lesson #1; The PAC-10 has owned the SEC this decade. Quote the Nit Picker above. NB: "this decade" began in 2000.

SEC has played Pac-10 15 times this decade.
SEC is 6-9. Of those six wins only 2 were on the road. Of Pac-10's 9 wins, 4 were on the road.
Look it up, minion. Or have an OU drop out do it for you.

Now to another pile of detritus from your big old bag of ka ka:

Georgia should be #2 behind USC-quote Hotty Toddy above.
Since your pre-season rankings indicate where teams should be now, you had to handicap Georgia based on last season.
Well, what a season it was:
Lost to South Carolina, Beat Alabama - they were 1-1 against two teams with a combined record of 13-12. Powerhouse indeed.
Lost to Tenn. by three touchdowns. Barely beat Vandy. Let Troy score 34 on them.
Even World Picker says defense is 2nd most important aspect of football success.
Holy cow, you are not getting enough air down there.

Open the WP's basement window, Hotty Toddy, and smell the fertilizer. It will clear your head.

Chris:
Didn't know you could read. Never read a newspaper myself, but my parrot often dwells on one.

SBH:
Don't know about Blevins, never listen to him. Don't know about the others either.
But,WP's comments are a cheap shot against Bob Berry. Why?
For one thing, the World Picker continues to belittle a guy who has been in the business longer than you or World Picker have been able to tie your own shoes.
Is he past his prime? Absolutely. Does he deserve some slack and respect because he has been around so long. Absolutely.

WP's comments are a cheap shot for another reason also: WP refuses to sign his name to his column. At least Bob Berry uses his own name. WP hides behind his computer and personally attacks Bob Berry - for no reason other than meanness. Cheap at best.
Even Don Rickles came out in the open when insulting folks.

Eric:
You are repeating yourselves again. Sop up your drool, take your meds, call WP and you two go to a meeting. (Don't forget to pay your taxes, chump.)

World Picker:
I don't owe you money. But if you are going as broke as your newspaper, I might make you a loan.

You have caved in once and you will cave in again because you are weak of charactrer.
It was so easy to get to you about your Top 10 I am not surprised you are bitter.

I see you are still an SEC homer. A broken clock is right twice a day, chump.
