Touchdown Sooners Possibly!
Published: 8/3/2010 2:55 PM

OU's season opener with Utah State is notable for three reasons.

1. Utah State has no defense.

2. The game is not on normal television.

3. Many OU fans will listen to their heroes on radio for the first time in ages.

The Aggies can actually ring up a few points. They scored 35 or more eight times last season. But the defense was so terrible, the final record was 4-8. The temperature and OU's offense could tiptoe up on triple figures.

This game will be on pay-per-view.

As a result, the radio broadcast will be popular.

For those unfamiliar with this branch of Sooner football, Bob Barry Sr. returns for, approximately, his 85th year of play-by-play.

Another classic moment can be expected.

"Marcus Murray takes the pitch at the twenty, check that, DeMarcus Dupree is at the fifteen, check that, Fred MacMurray is at the ten, check this, check that, check your coat and check your hat, check please and checkmate, touchdown Sooners!"

Sadly the Bob Barry Sr. quote above was probably taken from real game audio.

And Merv Johnson sounds like he is just bored out of his mind during games, like there are about 27 other things he'd rather be doing.

Sad but true!

Hey Pic, how about the one when he was describing a pitch-out i.e. "pitch-out on the forty, runs to the fifty, breaks loose on the fifty-five, sixty, and he will score."

Why are so many people pretending like OU has never played a PPV game before? Over the past 5 years or so, OU has had 1 home game per year televised ONLY on PPV: Utah State in 2010, Idaho State in 2009, Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2008, and Middle Tennessee in 2006. (Oh, pardon me. I guess that's 4 out of 5 years.)

Why the hyperbole? I hardly think this will be the first time many OU fans have heard the bumbling that is Bob Barry, Sr. calling a Sooner football game.

For the record, I laughed until I cried at your BBS rendition. It was on the money. The only thing that would've made it better is having Merv cut in and tell Bob that DeMarco actually fumbled at the 35.

I don't think anyone expects Utah State to be any real threat to the Sooners. And as for the Pay-Per-View, the couple hundred or so folks who'll order it will enjoy it, by Golly.

In your Bob Barry bit, you forgot the just audible voice of the spotter telling Bob what's actually happening;
"Murray takes the ball and busts through to the 20.-*that's Landry Jones dropping back*- CHECK THAT, Landry Jones finds an open receiver who gets tackled at the 20.-*Jones just got sacked*- CHECK THAT..."

Ahem, you might want to tread lightly on the long-in-the-tooth ice. The copy editors have been whispering. Just heard the name, not the rest of it. I'm sure it's nothing.

In my Business Communications class at OU in the early 70's, I had a project to get someone to speak to our class. I asked Bob Barry, and to my surprise, he accepted. He wowed the class with his humor and business insight. He was a class act. I have heard his many mispeaks but I will always remember his generosity that day.

Kenmore, you are also right. You can count on the spotter, barely audible in the background, saying something like loose ball, penalty flag down or something like that.

Picker, some of your best work!

In the early 70's I'm sure Bob Barry was a pretty good game announcer as well as a good man....

This is now 2010 & I'm sure he's STILL a very good man BUT his announcing has been way off since the mid-nineties....

I mean HIS mid-nineties not the 1990's....

My favorite Bob Barry call of all time...

"Bradford drops back, throws a DEEP pass... check that... the punt if fair caught at the 25"

Is Bob Barry, Sr. ever going to retire?
Glenn616 (3 years ago)
I'll be at the OU-Utah State game. Therefore, I won't have to put up with BBS on the radio.

You people are almost too nice.

And it's nearly time for the quarterback to step up to the free throw line.

While I am sure that Barry Sr. (not so much Jr.) is a wonderful and great man, such loyalty is a disservice to the fans. I appreciate the longevity, but just like JoePa...hang it up for us all.

It is absolutely painful listening to him.

Bob and Merv are class acts, but Merv should stay and Bob has got to go. Let him do some sideline interviews with some of the athletes or assistants to try and have him contribute.
