NORMAN — My colleague Guerin Emig posted some pre-scrimmage gold from OU linebacker Travis Lewis last week (see below).
I’ll take this opportunity to post some post-scrimmage platinum from the talkative Lewis.
After his White team won the annual Red/White Game 20-14, Lewis walked into the Red Room wearing a red St. Louis Cardinals ballcap (backwards), a red long-sleeve T-shirt and some red sweats — a significant couture step down from his satin all-white getup last year (he played for the White team) — Lewis expounded on his wardrobe, his efforts for the Red team and his anticipation of chowing down on some steak and potatoes while those White team members he helped conquer get to enjoy hot dogs and beans again.
Media: Your postgame attire seems to be toned down a bit from last year.
Lewis: “You know, I wasn’t able to be as creative as last year, but after looking in my closet, I came up with an outfit I was pretty proud of.”
Media: Is that it?
Lewis: “You know, it’s not too flashy and everything, but it gets the job done and it makes my point, as in my team was superior today.”
Media: So did your position coach, Brent Venables, see it yet?
Lewis: “He saw it, but he was on a different team this year. He didn’t really talk to me much about it. He was pretty mad pretty much the whole day.”
Media: Those Ray Bans you’re wearing, is that to shade the glare of the camera lights?
Lewis: “Yeah, my outfit, it’s kind of blinding at times, so the sunglasses are very fitting.”
Media: You don’t seem to be talking quite as much smack this year as you did last year.
Lewis: “Man, I’m telling you, I haven’t lost a spring game yet. I don’t just tell ‘em. They know what the deal is. I bring it all the time. I made some bets, some friendly bets, and I won all of ‘em. Because I’m always right, and the coaches and the players need to realize that. So it’s just another win in the book.”
Media: So you’re ready for some steak?
Lewis: “Yeah, steak dinner. They’re getting, I think hot dogs and beans. So just like last year, I’ll be holding the mustard and the ketchup and making sure everybody is eating the appropriate food.”
Media: Landry Jones said your team got all the calls.
Lewis: “What?! That’s coming from an offensive guy. First of all, offensive guys always get all the calls. We tease the refs that come to our practices all the time, you know, the offense has got some of them on the payroll. So for an offensive guy to say that, you just need to laugh at ‘em, be like, ‘huh.’ That’s how I feel about it.”
Lewis was asked some serious football questions, of course, but those queries, and his insightful responses, have been edited for levity. (Meaning, we’ll save those for a later blog.)
