Tubby reflects on TU trek

MILWAUKEE -- Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith -- who won a national championship at Kentucky -- was asked during a Thursday press conference about his most memorable NCAA Tournament moment.

“I’ve got to go back to my days at Tulsa where we had a great run there, and that was a great group of kids,” Smith said, referencing a 1994 journey to the Sweet Sixteen.

“We played right in Oklahoma City (and) beat a very good UCLA team. We were a 12 seed and they were a 5 seed. And look up at halftime and the score was -- I think we were up 27 or 30. Unbelievable run. Beat a good Oklahoma State team with Big Country.... That was probably as much fun as I’ve had in college basketball, when you talk about the experiences in the NCAA. Now, obviously winning a national championship is pretty -- it’s hard to top.”

Many of Smith’s TU players paid him the ultimate compliment by following in his footsteps. Shea Seals just led Booker T. Washington to a state championship. Pooh Williamson is an assistant coach at Texas A&M. Smith said Lou Dawkins has coached three state championship teams in Michigan. After Smith’s press conference, he asked a media member from Tulsa how McLain (coached by former TU player Cordell Love) did this season.

Smith said he takes a lot of pride in his former players’ coaching accomplishments. He said it’s gratifying to know “that these young men have reached their dreams and that we’ve had a positive influence on their lives. And they’re doing the same with their players and with the programs that they’re leading, at whatever level they’re leading their programs.”

Smith has coached four programs to NCAA Tournament appearances. His Golden Gophers will play Xavier in a first-round game Friday.

If TU could put together Shea Seals, Pooh Williamson & Lou Dawkins together on the same coaching.... Would it work ????

Would it be worth a try ????

I'd like to see it happen....
