As an Oklahoma State basketball point guard, assistant coach and head coach, Sean Sutton had a Stillwater address for 19 of the last 20 years. In 1992-93, he was an Ole Miss assistant coach. Otherwise, he was a Stillwater resident since 1990.
This month, Sutton, his wife Trena and their sons Hunter, Spencer and Sean Parker left behind their Stillwater lives to start new ones in Tulsa.
Whether they are permanent or temporary Tulsans depends on Sean’s ability to secure coaching employment. The Suttons are in a temporary-housing situation until Sean and Trena identify a suitable rental house.
“We’ve been here probably 2½ weeks now,” Sutton said by telephone on Tuesday night. “Certainly, we have great memories of Stillwater and I’m leaving some really good friends. . . . It was just time to leave that time of our lives behind.”
The Sutton boys are enrolled in school in Tulsa. Sean’s parents, Eddie and Patsy Sutton, also have a home in Tulsa. Sean’s younger brother Scott is preparing for his 12th season as Oral Roberts’ basketball coach.
Last week, Sean Sutton pleaded guilty to felony drug charges. He receives no prison time if he completes the requirements of a three-year deferred sentence. A few days before his court appearance, Sutton sold his Stillwater house.
The move to Tulsa has been “an easy transition,” Sutton said. “I can see why my brothers and my parents have raved about the city of Tulsa. The people have been great. They’ve been very supporting and very welcoming of myself and my family. We’re excited about this year. Our kids are really excited and really happy. As a dad, I’m thrilled with that.”
At 41, Sutton is searching for a return to college basketball. He wants a second shot at being a head coach, but says he would consider an assistant’s position or even a job in professional basketball.
“I know quite a few people in the NBA,” he said. “It’s not something I’ve thought a great deal about, but if the right situation came, I might consider it.”
