No, Roy. Drew Brees threw five touchdowns.

Is it our imagination, or is it possible that Cowboy safety and former OU battering ram Roy Williams couldn't cover a Christmas casserole?

In the New Orleans game, he looked more like a revolving door than a pass defender, with receivers spinning him around at random.

He's a fantastic hitter.

But even in college, we recall receivers turning him inside out on serveral occsions.

Why not pile on the grub and elevator shoes and make him a linebacker.

In other football matters, we have been asked to rate the bowl games.

We'll do that in the Picks pubished in the newspaper Thursday.

Here's a preview.

1. Best Bowl, Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl, OSU versus Alabama.

Best spectacle.

They can call it whatever fancy name they want; but to us, it will always be the Weedeater/Independence.

It is great for many reasons: It won't go away. Tortuous weather could ensue. Bad teams have no shame and show up to play without disguises.

OSU and Alabama are 6-6 each. OSU's offense was so good, it was taken apart by the coaches! Alabama's coach was fired. An anonymous source bought some Weedeater tickets and is giving them away to any OSU students looking for the reward of Shreveport.

2. Fiesta II, Ohio State versus Florida.

Ohio State-Michigan was the national championship game.

Fiifty-one day layoff. Please.

3. Fiesta I, OU versus Boise State.

Tater Tots to milk underdog role to hilt.

Stoops has a history of thrashing underdogs.

Will the pros be scared off by the possibility of Peterson being injury prone?

The Saints looked solid. They only showed weakness when Jones broke away for his long run. But New Orleans didn't let this phase them and rebounded to play solid ball the rest of the game. Sean Payton: coach of the year. Drew Brees: MVP. Reggie Bush: not rookie of the year, but still darn good. The Saints have lost one conference game, against an inconsistent Panthers team. I think they could take the Bears to town, if it's in warm weather or a dome.

With Harris gone, the Bears might be soon to follow.

Didn't it seem like Payton went right after Mr. Williams?

Who's best? The trendy pick is San Diego -- but coach Marty is famous for December freezes. Have you noticed they don't even let him, have a head-set anymore? He almost broke down and cried in the press conference yesterday, praising his runner. They need to lock him up in the press box.

I think Baltimore may quietly be having the best season in the NFL. Billick firing Fassel has proven to be a brilliant move. Bears are fading. Cowboys are faded. Colts couldn't defend a high school running game. San Diego would be lost without LT (though right now they's got 'em good). I go with Ravens, followed by the Chargers, then the Saints.

Chris: It's never, ever, been more wide open -- about six have a legit chance to win the bowl.

Baltimore is solid, it just doesn't score much -- one of the pinhead refs makes a bad 70-yard pass interference call, it's over.

You see heaven's gift to football, Brady, screaming at his teammates?

Not that Marty is coaching unplugged, I guess that's the team to beat. Too trendy, though.

Shoud be the best playoffs ever.

Seriously: Roy Williams couldn't play linebacker?

Unless the voters on the MVP have a stroke, the MVP of this league is Ladanian Tomlinson. I think we can start talking about it: Is L.T. the greatest? I will say not yet, but he is ascending to a level few ever reach. Smith was there, Barry was there, Walter was there, Brown was there. LT is the best combination of power and speed since Brown. And, he can catch it out of the backfield. He is going to set a touchdown standard that may not duplicated for awhile.

No doubt about it, the NFL is wide open. It seems any team worthy of a pick has something against it.

Take San Diego. Good defense. Very good offense. BUT, young QB (the Steeler QB did it though) and Marty are a negative.

Take the Colts. Good offense with a great QB. BUT, the defense can't stop the run. They have almost no chance because of the defense.

The Patriots are too old.

The Saints seem to be very complete. Maybe a feel good pick for all the marbles. Not sure the defense is good enough though.

The Bears have the defense and the return game to win it all. BUT, Rex Grossman is too inconsistent.

The Jags have no QB.

The Ravens can't score enough.

The Cowboys can't stop the long pass.

Wide open for sure.

As for Roy Williams, Stoops and Co. had him in the perfect spot. Strong safety, but really linebacker #4. He played the run/short pass most of the time, and blitzed often. Best tackler in college football I've seen in years. He does not belong in the back of a cover 2 defense. He got away with in college most of the time, because the other guy wasn't good enough. Not in the NFL. Dallas needs to change the way they use Roy.

The old 'Stoops has a history of thrashing underdogs' mantra is getting old. Yes, Stoops has thrashed an underdog or two in his time. Know who else has done it? Everyone with a good college football team. Examples?...Parseghian...Hayes...Schembechler...Switzer...Fairbanks...Bryant...McKay...Robinson...Bowden the Elder...Bowden, Tommy... Bowden Terry...Holtz (Little Lou Lou, not Skippy)...Tuberville (when he gets the chance)...Paterno...need I continue?

Wann: We were talking contemporary coaches. Not from the wax museum.

I can name you many current big-time coaches who don't come close to beating dogs the way Stoops does.

No, you don't need to continue.

Please.

How about this for a solid sleeper: Cincy.

From the wax museum? It must be nice to be able to conveniently tailor your criteria to fit your argument.
