Two Local TV Stations Demote TU
Published: 4/20/2009 5:36 PM
Last Modified: 4/20/2009 5:36 PM

From time to time, we like to check in with local TV sports operations.

That can be a distressing endeavor.

Take Saturday night; take Saturday night and explain or apologize.

Saturday, two college football teams had spring games -- TU and Oklahoma State.

The TU spring game was extremely newsworthy, as the starting quarterback job was up in the air, with the candidates including a big-time recruit, and a transfer from a big-time school. Also, the TU spring game was a big story because the offensive coordinator had left, begging the question: was he the chief reason for the recent success?

On a scale of 1-10, the TU spring game was a 10.

The OSU spring game was like flag-football, a formality, a party.

One to 10, OSU's game was 1. Barely.

Yet KOTV (channel 6) and KJRH (channel 2) each led with OSU's spring game stories over TU's!

Did we mention TU is in Tulsa?

This was a rare opportunity to give the locals some spotlight.

A Tulsa station going with OSU over TU in a spring game, talk about questionable decision-making.

Only Channel 8 got it right, leading with TU.

A word of warning to TU: Don't forget where you were before you went to fancy passing. Nowhere. You try to play it straight without the numbers, you try to start up the option stuff like tough guys instead of innovative guys, .500 or worse is not that far away.

Picker..TU and the option? Say it ain't so! Did they actually display the option? I was in Dallas and missed any such reportage.
TAB (4 years ago)
TU didn't run any option plays at all. Clearly the Picker also went to Stillwater (j/k). The new offensive coach is from WVU and they do run the ball a lot, but it's still a spread. I doubt the freshman starts; the kid is a stud, though.
Bixby Jeff (4 years ago)
TV stations program to their audience. Tell me, of the two, do more people in Tulsa care about OSU or about TU?
CJP (4 years ago)
Go back to your Stillwater Shanty's Jeff and Vern. Typical OSU attitude, acting like they've actually ever won something in football. It's sad.
DwayneDavis (4 years ago)
Come on "Picker" can't you just come out and say why channel 6 led with OSU and will always lead with OSU when in doubt?
Arbythree (4 years ago)
It's about the advertising dollars.

Homer, John “Orange-aid” Holcomb is expected to lead his sportscast w/ OSU after all he is the commentator for the OSU radio broadcast.

Sure there’s more OSU & OU fans within the Tulsa Media market, but it doesn’t justify why TU constantly gets 2nd fiddle in terms of coverage & PR over the other state schools.

Smallest private school in D-1 football, zero tax dollars use to fund the university, TU’s athletic budget is 1/6h the size of the state schools, & yet they compete, win, & succeed against the much larger “Goliath’s” of the college football world.

Isn’t part of the drama in sports to ‘root for the underdog? TU deserves better ‘respect within its own hometown.

It is a shame that those OSU/OU fans who “hero” worship & idolize their sports figures fail to see that there’s some pretty exciting football being played off of ’ol Route 66.

Back to back 10+ win seasons, one of the nation’s leaders in total offensive production, a very stylish, fun atmosphere, low ticket prices, and you don’t give up your whole day just to attend a game!

As far as convenience, cost consciousness, & competitiveness, you just can’t find a better “deal” than supporting them Hurricane.

Go TU

To find a media outlet that gives TU a distant third in coverage, you have to look no further than the Oklahoma City (whoops, I mean Tulsa) World. I just move back to Tulsa after 50 years away and I'm appalled at the favoritism given to the Central Oklahoma teams. The coverage the past three days provides typical examples. Who cares if a lot of Sooner and Aggie fans live in the city; TU is still the city's school.
dcood (4 years ago)
TU's recent success has alot more to do with their last two trigger men, Johnson and Smith, than with Malzahn. Like it or not, any football's team success or lack thereof, starts with the QB, period. Paul Smith is making his living in the NFL and Johnson has a great chance to get drafted. These two kids they have now are not in the same league as either of those guys.
Bixby Jeff (4 years ago)
Wow, CJP! All I said is that there are more OSU fans in Tulsa than TU fans. That is a fact. I never said anything about winning anything and I am certainly not on any high horse regarding OSU athletics. Lighten up, Francis!

I also consider myself to be a TU fan, although not an avid one, and think what they are doing there is amazing. By saying that there are more OSU fans than TU fans is not a put down to TU at all. Again, simply stating a fact.
CJP (4 years ago)
Bixby, I just get really defensive for TU because the favoritism in Tulsa of OU and OSU really gets to me. Dcood, don't you think it's a little early to say the guys we have now aren't even in the same league? It's tough to judge off a spring game performance. David Johnson didn't look very good in last year's spring game and had a pretty good year (with a few games we all know about being the exception)
love 918 (4 years ago)
Laffalot, name a "Goliath" that TU has beaten? Actually, would anyone believe that TU could finish in the top half of the SEC or Big 12? I haven't seen a TU team in the last 5 years that could finish in the top 3/4 of the SEC.

TU football is fun to watch (I'm a regular attendee), but please don't deceive yourselves...they can't play with the big boys. They were rightfully the 2nd team reported.
dcood (4 years ago)
love918: I think TU had Oklahoma and Adrian P on the ropes in Norman 3 years ago. To say they couldnt compete in those two leagues is invalid. TU has played some quality football the last few seasons, and last time I checked, they are not in the Big 12 or SEC and are small, private school with like 3k students, not exactly the University of Texas...
The Picker (4 years ago)
Bixby Jeff: On the whole, you're right, more OSU fans than TU. But not on this spring game. The TU angle was more interesting to everybody. There's no excuse in not leading with TU. Unless you're lost.

Dcood: What a short memory. Remember what TU was like before Gus? Bad. Very bad. Where are the two throwers you mentioned? It's simple. You can't play it straight without the numbers. Go ask Burnsie. You need a a hook, a way to attract a player. The wildest offense in the country was just such a hook. You go trying to be all balanced with limited numbers, it's a nightmare waiting to happen.

All anybody is talking about is the new quarterback's running ability. Note how often the quarterbacks ran when TU was a rising star?

Never, basically.

Is this the worst pro draft in history?

The Georgia qb is an arena guy.
TAB (4 years ago)
The Picker needs to pay more attention. TU went to three bowls in four years and won a Conference Championship C-USA before Gus. The defense is a bigger issue than the offense for TU; the talent on offense is just fine. Hope the line gets better by Labor Day.

James Killian could run.

Just because things change, it doesn't mean it's bad. You do your best with the talent you have. If they run more, so be it. No need to rush to conclusions or forget basic aspects of TU's recent history.

I love how every TU fan gripes and moans about TU not getting enough love in Tulsa and yet not even half of them show up for their own football games.

Look, I love TU. I want to see them succeed. They are a great story for what they have to work with. But the facts are facts:

OSU has more fans in the Tulsa area than TU does.
OSU is going to be ranked in the top 10 to start the season.
Just like TU having a new coordinator, OSU has a new one as well.
And instead of one or two new players in skill positions to watch, OSU has at least ten.
The capability of this year's OSU football season is matched only by the '88 season.

There's just a whole lot more excitement surrounding OSU, both locally and nationally. TU fans and the picker may disagree with me but thats only 5,001 people versus 100,000 people that do agree.

I'll take my chances with OSU and so will the TV stations.
CJP (4 years ago)
MexiMike, you do realize we have a EXTREMELY SMALL ALUMNI BASE unlike Picken's state? It's funny you throw out such a large number of OSU fans into the fold, because OSU fans tend to inflate how important they are in the eyes of the nation. Now, TU might not be that big nationally, but neither is OSU. Get over yourself.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
CJP, how did I inflate anything?

Is OSU not going to be a top 10 preseason team? Do they not have more fans in Tulsa than TU?
Is OSU not getting a lot more national media attention from the likes of ESPN, Fox Sports, Rivals, etc. than TU?

Yes, OSU has more grads per year because of the size of the university and also because TU is a private school, but how does that change any of the facts? TV stations will pump the story that will get the most people watching.

I don't need to get over anything. It's just the truth.
CJP (4 years ago)
That should not matter in the CITY OF TULSA..which houses the UNIVERSITY OF TULSA. that's the truth.
Gene M (4 years ago)
MexiMike, as you point out, Tulsa is a private school. And, the focus on book learning. TU graduates are involved in all sort of activities, and they may not all be athletic. Now ask Dexter Manley, an OSU alum, about OSU's educational endeavors and you will find out wherein lies the difference. For TU alums the world is a wonderful place. For OSU grads, the world is "how bout dem Cowboys?"
ken7 (4 years ago)
So Gene, old boy, you are saying all OSU grads are dumb? That's pretty closed minded.
Gene M (4 years ago)
ken7. not all, only 88 percent.
iflyfast (4 years ago)
TU is on TV 8 times (once OU game gets picked up by FSN, 9 times) this year. So. Miss game will probably get picked up (if both teams live up to their potential), that makes 10. How many games on TV does OSU have this year (Bedlam doesn't count)?
dcood (4 years ago)
Picker: Couldnt agree more about the upcoming draft, doesnt change the fact that Johnson may get drafted... The game I referred to, TU@OU, was coached by Kragthorpe with Charlie Stubbs calling the plays. Point is, they were not terrible before Malzahn got there. They went to bowls and won more than they lost. My point is still valid; you can have all the fancy 'hooks' to get players.. if you dont have a stud at QB you are sunk. Doesnt matter whether it is the 'bone or Mike Leach... And yes, they were terrible with Burns, not a news flash.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Yes CJP, TU is in Tulsa. But that still has nothing to do with the point. Let me slow down for you.

More people in Tulsa care about OSU football than TU football.

That's it. There is no more to it.

Gene, nobody is trying to argue "book learning." In fact, had you read the blog itself, you would have found that this is indeed, about football. And if I want to ask an OSU alum about educational endeavors, I'll ask T. Boone Pickens. I'm fairly sure his world is a very wonderful place.

iflyfast, nice try. First of all, TU's website shows 7 games on TV. Second of all, TU had to switch 4 of those 7 games from Saturdays to odd days of the week just so they could be on some sort of television. Finally, the 3 that actually are on a Saturday are on stations that the majority of people don't even have! Mountain West Sports Network? CBS College Sports Network? You might get the OU game on a basic cable station on a Saturday, but if we are counting that one, why aren't we counting the Bedlam game?
