U. S. Open Yawn

Why was this one of the best NBA finals ever?

Because there were two and a half heavies to pull against -- LeBron counts as two bullies to root against, Wade, one half.

Big Baby James is a classic heavy, an egomaniac without reason, a choker who thinks he is better than everybody else. When the heat is on, LeBron is far from the kitchen, he's in his gold-plated gym, dunking on nobody.

And the golf game needs somebody like Tiger, a stringbean turned muscle man, a con artist at home, so to speak, with airheads.

No Tiger, and the U.S. Open is like the Greater Hooterville Invitational.

What's to care about, beyond when the head pro at Stepford Country Club, Grinning Phil, will choke.

Heavies help make the sport -- a Yankee billionaire striking out against some minimum wage rookie, Duke acting uppity at college basketball, the mere thought of Notre Dame football starting arguments.

As long as LeBron is himself, pro basketball should be hot in the ratings.

The U.S. Open without watching Tiger push another one into the trees, it's an afterthought, it's background sights and sounds.

So true.

On the first hole for the head pro at Stepford CC, he chunked one in the water and made a double bogey.

On the first hole for his playing mate, Dustin Hacker Johnson, he hit one in the creek, laid out, hit one in the pond, made a cool triple bogey.

Tiger's legacy lives on.

Hit this one on the head Pick...to American finisher a 19 yr old amateur? Or was it Berrigus...either way, crappy showing for the red, white, and blue...and in our nation's capitol no less.

It was Robert Garrigus. I hadn't heard of him before the U.S. Open.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
