UCLA eyes Bill Young, but he seems comfortable at OSU

The Los Angeles Times reports that the UCLA football program contacted Oklahoma State and was denied permission to interview Bill Young for the Bruins’ defensive coordinator position.

Ultimately, what does that mean? Nothing, really. UCLA practiced common courtesy by seeking permission to talk with Young, and OSU exercised its right to deny permission. That doesn’t mean that Young is prohibited from speaking with UCLA coach Rich Neuheisel. If Young were interested in the UCLA job, he would interview for it.

The 2010 season was Young’s second as the Cowboy coordinator. He is an Oklahoma City native. He is an OSU alum. He is well-paid ($360,000 last year, with a raise soon to come). OSU just put the finishing touches on a recruiting class stocked with tackles, ends and linebackers.

Young has the freedom to talk with UCLA, but he probably won’t. He seems quite comfortable in Stillwater. And at the age of 64, he remains energetic, effective and says he wants to coach for several more years. The guess here is that when Young retires, he’ll retire from Oklahoma State.

My thoughts exactly. Why leave OSU to coach UCLA football? Seems like a step in the wrong direction for Bill. Plus he said he wanted to be back in Oklahoma, that is why he came back. Glad to see UCLA showed class in this matter.

Bill, I read all the time about this "permission to speak" stuff. How does that work? Is it simple coutesy and considered good form but not binding on a team?

I understand the rule in the NFL to be that,if you are denied permission, you can't interview a coach for a lateral hire without risking tampering sanctions and loss of draft picks. Would UCLA be risking any sanctions by contacting Coach Young now that permission has been denied?

Excellent question, soko.

I've never heard of a team being penalized by the NCAA for contacting a coach so one wonders if it's not merely a courtesy rather than a rule. What weight does a rule have if there are no penalties for breaking it?

The practice brings another question to mind.

Since some are denied permission to talk to a coach when asked (such as oSu did in this case), what does it say about a schools relationship with a given coach when they do grant another school permission to talk to that coach?

I agree that the questions sokodad and SixGunSam have raised are interesting and would perhaps warrant another article for clarification.

There is no rule in the NCAA like the NFL. Luck the AD at West Virginia was interviewing Dana Holgerson two days before the ou game and didnt contact OSU from all indications.

It is a courtesy.

Mike Gundy extends the courtesy to not taking coaches from teams during recruiting if possible.
