UDecide: Defining memorable
Published: 7/8/2008 10:47 PM

Memorable has a few different definitions. Phrases such as worth remembering, notable, impressive and celebrated are among those used to define memorable.

When it came to pinpointing Oklahoma State's most memorable football game, well, that was tough to define. Many OSU faithful who have endured a lot of the ups and downs tend to focus on agony and heartache the Cowboys have provided on the football field over the years. The term "Poke Choke" has been associated more than a few times.

It would be interesting to find out what OSU fans feel is the all-time Poke Choke, I mean, heartbreaking defeat.
There are more than a few to choose from.

But come on OSU fans, this exercise in finding and determining the Cowboys' most memorable games does include victories. And believe it or not, it was tough trying to nail down what victories over OSU's football history I deemed as most memorable.

I'm sure there are those who will disagree with any of the three wins (1984 Gator Bowl, 1995 Bedlam and 2001 Bedlam) I placed on the ballot for this vote. Maybe even with the other two games (1985 Bedlam Ice Bowl and 1988 Bedlam heartbreak of Brent Parker's dropped pass). If you feel that's the case, then chime in with your thoughts and opinions. After all, in the spirit of this election year, you can decide.

As they in some political precincts, vote early and vote often. (PS: My vote is 2001 Bedlam, Josh Fields to Rashaun Woods part I. That game changed the mind-set of OSU football and kick-started the stadium renovation project in Stillwater. If the Cowboys don't win that game, maybe Fields-to-Woods part II the next year does not occur and OSU football is not flush with facility and financial upgrades today.)

The '97 Texas game (42-16) was a classic in Stillwater. That game highlighted a good (an somewhat unexpected) season.

In your "Others Considered" box for Most Memorable Game in OSU history, you made a comment about the highest ranked teams (NR #3) that the Cowboys had ever defeated. In 1967 OSU defeated Colorado (NR #3) in Boulder, at their homecoming, by the score of 10-7. I know, I was there. This is acient history, but us old guys are still out here. By the way, The Fifth Demension was their half-time show and the stadium was littered with drunks when we left to get on the bus to the airport.

Please excuse my mispelling of the word "dimension". Before I attended OSU I couldn't spell engineer either, but now I are one.

There are a few great memories of OSU football in my mind:

Beating No. 3 ranked Colorado in Stillwater back in '72.

Josh Fields leading a great 17-14 comeback win over the Swooners in Norman, knocking them out of the NC race.
Then, smacking the Swooners again the next year in Stillwater.

The terrible, terrible PF call forcing a desperation pass by Mike Gundy to the endzone that was dropped.

The win over Nebraska in Lincoln (finally).

The amazing Holiday Bowl blowout by Barry Sanders lead Cowboys over Wyoming.

There are more, but those are my tops.

Having been at the Ice Bowl in '85 (I was in the OSU Marching Band then....both bands easily outnumbered the other fans in the stands) that experience will stay with me forever; I don't think I've ever been so cold in my life. But, the Bedlam game in 2001 is still more meaningful to me. I have several reasons:

1) OU was coming off a National Championship year and was positioning itself for anotehr run.

2) OSU was seen as a bump in the road by almost everyone including OU (to their misfortune)

3) It paved the way back to respectability for OSU

4) I met my wife the night of that game (so it's one of the best days of my life for a couple of reasons).

So, thanks Fields - Woods ... you set me up well!!!

2001 Bedlam. The 16-13 victory just meant too much to the players, staff, school, and alumni to be underestimated. That single game is the reason why OSU is where it as at now and where it is going.

That game for me goes into the rare category of world-changing for our school. I put it up there with the decision to hire Eddie.
