STILLWATER - Wrestling extra time has not proven to be the difference for Oklahoma State today at the Big 12 Wrestling Championships at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys split their eight semifinal bouts, three of which were lost in overtime, and stand in third place with 34 points. Iowa State is first with 48 points and Nebraska is second with 41.5 points.
OSU's biggest loss came at 133 pounds where top-ranked Coleman Scott fell 5-3 in double overtime to Missouri's Tyler McCormick. The Missouri wrestler was just 4-7 entering the tournament after missing nearly two months due to injuries.
The Cowboys' pride is injured majorly right now. Scott's loss started a bad trend for OSU. Newly McSpadden gave up a late reversal to Missouri's Michael Chandler at 157 pounds that forced overtime. Chandler won 7-2 in OT thanks to a 5-point move. At 165, OSU's Jake Dieffenbach fell 3-1 in overtime to Nebraska's Stephen Dwyer.
Tyler Shinn, a 4-2 winner over OU's Joey Fio in the second tiebreaker period, and senior 141-pounder Nathan Morgan advanced to the finals. Two more Cowboys are through to the finals. Brandon Mason earned a 4-2 overtime win over Iowa State's Aron Scott at 174 pounds and heavyweight Jared Rosholt picked up a third-period fall against Nebraska's Jon May.
The consolation and third-place matches start at 4 p.m. The championship finals are at 7 p.m.
The standings after the championship semifinals:
Iowa State 48 (6 finalists)
Nebraska 41.5 (5 finalists)
OSU 34 (4 finalists)
Missouri 32 (4 finalists)
OU 8 (1 finalist)
