USC Top Heavy

Somebody send an email from Vegas saying that everybody and his and her trust fund was taking USC over Ohio State minus the points.

OU was another huge play.

Here's a frightening stat: Something like 70 percent of games that are 70-30 or more with the public lose!

Hey Licker,
Couldn't help but notice you think the winner of USC-Ohio State is a lock for the National Championship. You took SC. I went to USC so I wouldn't mind seeing that, but have you looked closely at USC's record over the past couple of seasons in games they should win? Stanford? UCLA? Even though I like the idea, don't put USC in the big game just yet. Also, bear in mind that their QB hasn't really proven himself on his own yet. Last year he had QB Booty to take some of the pressure off.
And there's still the matter of the NCAA deciding to pass some sort of judgement on them for the Reggie Bush getting paid scandal. If they ever decide to do that, that is.

So are we to assume that teams perform based on how people bet on them in Vegas? That's pretty stupid.

CM: I'm not talking about the last year's team. But your point is well taken about USC not having proved its super value.

Mostly what I'm thinking is Ohio State is 100 percent certified average.

As much as OSU has been teased and taunted, it's like a bowl game where the underdog has a huge edge. Which is worrisome. And your coach is a typical LA camera-ready glory hog. But I don't trust the Ohio State qb.

Tell me about Oregon, that team could be dangerous.

And another thing, Mike, stick to the penny slots.

Of course teams frequently play the way the point spread people figure.

They're geniuses.

Licker, You're right about the Oregon game being tough, but at least it's in LA. USC will have to play on the road at Arizona, where the Wildcats have played them strong with M. Stoops at the helm. And as silly as it sounds, they also have to go to Stanford (who shocked them two years ago) and to UCLA (who did the same at the Coliseum last year). So they're a long way from undefeated.
And Pete Carroll? I think he knows what will eventually come down from the NCAA, as he already interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons in the off season. I wonder if he's trying to jump ship. Why else would someone leave a program like USC? He already proved he's not much of an NFL head coach.

Interesting bent on the USC - Ohio State "showdown". Hope you're right...I've got Ohio State plus the points tonight. I missed all but the first half of the KU game last night but I got lucky on that one...I had the Jaw Hawks plus 3 and a half so I came out okay. Other picks today are...TCU minus the 14, Fresno plus 2 and a half...Michigan minus 2 (carefully...)...and Uck-La plus 8 in Gary Gilmore land. Good luck to all.

are you kidding me? 30,000 show up?. Gundy in 4th year. New money, new castle. where's the national championship?
MIKE (4 years ago)
So much for that 70/30 stat...I guess I'll go back to the penny slots now.

Steve, Ohio State was overrated then, they were overrated last year, and they are certainly overrated this year. The Big 10 is soft and slow and that has nothing to do with any kind of betting statistic.

Ohio State as I said, OVERATED, USC is OVERATED as well. OU is probably overated. I just don't see any of the current top 5 going through the season undefeated. USC has cleared on big hurdle. They still have to play AZ ST, AZ, Oregon. OU still has TX, TX Tech, OSU and TCU. Georgia was lucky to get away, LSU will get beat. I just don't see any of them getting through the schedule unscathed. USC may have the best chance as their toughest games are all at home. OU's secondary still worries me as from time to time you see people running free through it and one of the QB's they play against will finally exploit it.

As for the picker, your picks make about as much sense as Notre Dame. None. But this season, who's does?

Hey Picker, if the teams performed as Vegas bets, everyone would be a winner.

USC may have trouble with the Ducks. Especially if that one PAC 10 crew with all the Oregon Alum calls the game.

OU will have difficulty with TX TECH and OSU. I think Texas may be a little down this year and a lot of people voted for them not knowing who else to vote for. Ohio State is at best average. They have zero speed on the defense and little on offense without their starting TB. Their QB proved suspect as we thought.

Mizzou is still a ? as they have run up big #'s and did get by Illinois. They may be the best in the country.

I think Georgia and LSU will both lose at least one and maybe 2 games.

OU will need some luck to get through without a loss.

Mizzou maybe playing for a National Title with USC. I don't thing Petey and the boys will get through the PAC 10 without a loss. I don't really think they proved anything beating Ohio State. They were uncovered for what they are, mediocre.

OU never has trouble with Tech in Norman. 2 touchdown win. OSU will have to score 70 to beat OU... Their D has zero shot at stopping OU, but if they turn it into a shootout they could make a game out of it.

TO SCOTT GUY: sorry, you're wrong about USC's toughest games being at home. They travel to Arizona, where the Wildcats have played them real close. And they travel to UCLA, who beat them last year at the Coliseum. And they also travel to Stanford. I know how bad Stanford is, but they were that bad two years ago when the ambushed USC. Oregon is at home, but that too could be a close one. Especially if USC is as overrated as you claim.
And OU's toughest test will probably be in Stillwater at the end of the year. T-Tech always crumbles in Norman. Kansas and Nebraska are in Norman, too, so we'll see. I don't see a trip to College Station as any real threat.
