Uihlein Set for Big Year
Published: 8/30/2010 2:20 PM

Oklahoma State golfer Peter Uihlein had a pretty great start to his school year on his birthday on Sunday.
He won the U.S. Amateur, the fourth OSU player (first since Scott Verplank in 1984) to win the tournament.
Uihlein is one of a handful of the nation's top amateurs currently on the team at OSU.
It is amazing the Cowboys have been unable to win the NCAA title the past two years (finishing second this past year) despite a team loaded with what many believe are future pro stars.
Uihlein is a terrific player with a great future. And, it says much about OSU golf that he was just one of three OSU players that many felt had a chance to win the U.S. Amateur.
We know football is starting this week and that will dominate the news.
However, Uihlein winning the U.S. Amateur is a big deal and the local media should not ignore it.

I agree, John, that OSU is stacked for the coming year. Could you imagine if Rickie Fowler hadn't gone pro?

On the note of national championships, OSU was robbed the past two years with the start up of the Match Play. Both years, I believe, they were lapping the field in stroke play, only to lose when they switched to Match Play.

So, while I agree with you, let's not call them underachievers, because the NCAA has robbed these kids of two National Championships.

Agreed, Pokefan04. Both of the last two years, OSU led the NCAA tourney all throughout match play and that meant absolutely nothing going into stroke play.

The whole reason they switched the format was so that "it would be more exciting for viewers." So when last year's championship took place, where exactly was it broadcasted? NOWHERE. Not on TV, not on cable, not online, nowhere.

What exactly is the point of having a format more viewer friendly if nobody can even view it???
