It doesn't hurt to ask, so the Tulsa World did.
In light of the replay fracas at the OU-Oregon game, we asked the Big 12 if we could send a reporter to sit in the replay booth with the replay official during the OU-Middle Tennessee State game.
We didn't want to pester or harass the replay official, or even offer unsolicited opinions when a play had to be reviewed. We just wanted to write a story about what it is like to be a replay official and what conditions the replay official has to endure.
Give the Big 12 props for at least considering the request. But the request was shot down for a couple of reasons.
1, It would set a precedent. If the Big 12 allowed our paper in the booth, they would have to let others in the booth in the future.
2, Space is at a premium and the replay folks need all the elbow room they can get.
Upon further review, I wish they had let us in. It could have been a decent story and I think that's why the Big 12 at least considered opening the door to the booth.

He joined the Tulsa World on Oct. 17, 1989, the same day an earthquake struck the World Series. He is the OSU basketball beat writer and a columnist and feature writer during football season. In 2007, he wrote a book about Oklahoma State football with former Cowboy coach Pat Jones.
