View bald eagles at Hulah Lake

Reader Chad Nightingale shared the following. I couldn't put it better myself, so, here's his e-mail.

"I thought I'd share a neat observation from yesterday morning on Hulah Lake.

While the hunting was poor, I saw more Eagles in one place than I have ever seen. Using my spotting scope from the eastern edge of the lake I started counting and ended up counting 26 different Eagles.

I'm not sure if Golden's winter in the area or not but I think they were all Bald Eagles, some being juveniles.

It is also worth the drive to see the lake level. Since Bartlesville pulls water for consumption, it may end up going dry if we don't get solid rains in the near future.

To see all the dry ground on the western arm of the lake and the fact the river is a good 1/2 mile or more from actually connecting with the lake is pretty amazing.

If the weather holds and the lakes stay frozen I'd expect the eagles to stay concentrated. If you are looking for a neat excursion, head up to Hulah lake."

My New Year Day tradition is to get up early and go to Keystone Dam and watch the eagles there. I have always seen eagles there. Several years ago an eagle soared directly over me. He was so close I could see the individual feathers in his wings. It was a beautiful experience. Absolute silence except for the wind and the eagle above me. I felt like the eagle was so close that I could reach up and touch him.

The Outdoors

Kelly Bostian is an Iowa boy who developed a knack for writing about the outdoors as a college kid - way back when wild turkeys were scarce - at Iowa State University. He comes to Oklahoma by way of Alaska, where he worked 23 years as outdoor editor and later managing editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. He comes to Green Country with two beautiful daughters, an extraordinarily tolerant wife, and an 11-year-old female black Labrador retriever named Tag, who knows she's actually the brains behind everything that Kelly does.
