Was Gas Taken?

The Oklahoma City NBA team has officially applied for the following trademark rights for a name for the new team.

The names were filed with the US Patent and Trademark office.

After seeing the names, the Patent office probably closed early due to laughter.

The names applied for are:

The Baron.

(As in Baron wasteland. Not only is baron uppity in tough times, it's dumb.)

The Bison.

(Was hippo taken?)

Energy.

(If you think illustrating thunder would be difficult, try illustrating an entire field.)

Marshalls.

(Festus for mascot. Sounds dated.)

Thunder.

(Dark cloud image is the worst of the lot.)

Wind.

(Gas is NOT taken).

If this is the best they can do, it makes you wonder about drafting players, doesn't it.

I have a couple....
Mountain Boomers! (state lizard) thanks to DG
Range (player has good range? farm land considered range?) thanks to JB
Plainsmen! thanks to my Enid Alumni...

I agree on the other names... But I still somewhat like the Marshalls, even though it's old....

I'm just glad to see them come to Oklahoma....

Also... is the WNBA team coming to Tulsa?

Um...did they mean Marshals and not Marshalls? The only Marshalls I know are proper names. Are we naming it after a famous person?? I mean, "marshall" is sometimes used in Americanized English, but do we want to plainly make us look like dumb okies?

I still say we should name them the OKC Temporaries because that is exactly what they will turn out to be.
Kansas City Here We Come!!!

What is all the mystery about the nickname? I would have thought it would have been completed by now. The 'PBC' (Professional Basketball Club, LLC) should have gotten this done ASAP. Think how much additional money they would have made by now if they had a name, in advertising and merchandising of the new logo.

Chris and BDOUG, unfortunately one of the names registered was the MARSHALLS, why they didn't spell it MARSHALS, is somewhat interesting. Perhaps Penny and her brother Garry Marshall are secretly involved, who knows.

I'd like to thank the Picker for his due diligence in not using the nickname 'Chaw' for the first time since this whole name thing began. I mean I realize not everyone's gonna be happy with the name, but let's not shame the new franchise just yet!

Finally, having been raised in eastern Oklahoma, loving Tulsa forever, I have been a resident of Edmond for many years now. I believe there is not much difference in OKC and Tulsa. Both have basically the same things to do as far as restaurants and night life. You can argue that point until the cows come home. The biggest similarity with these two cities is..the people. Like it or not, we have great people in this state, east, west, north, and south. We just need to appreciate what each city has, and enjoy both cities when we can.

There's a story on Yahoo today about the misspelling of Marshals/Marshalls, but at least they blamed it on the league, and not the team. What a lame list of choices! Personally, I still prefer the SuperSonic Drive-Ins, but I guess that's not going to happen.

Hey Licker! If you're such a good judge of nicknames, why don't you come up with a decent one for yourself? Or better yet...
Come up with a good one for the team. I'm sure they are reading and hearing all the opinions about the list of possible nicknames. I'm sure they also understand that it's going to be impossible to please everyone.
But what they might not understand is the creative resource they have in YOU: The Tulsa World Licker! I would love, LOVE, to have you come up with a SERIOUS list of possible names. Then you could tell everyone how you came up with the coolest name ever and how you really ARE a creative mastermind. You might as well try, since nothing you've ever written is going to give us that idea.

The NBA.

Don't care!

The title made me think you were doing a Ryan Broyles story, naming all the other players that were in on the free gas plan.

Re: Ryan Broyles and the free gas plan;

"There is no such thing as a free lunch". Michael Lake, Reggie Bush's college agent.

Nonetheless, Bush's USC plan appears to be the cleanest plan overall:
Have mom and dad launder the cash for you.

What does a "Chaw" look like, World Picker? You gonna make us wait until you wear your t-shirt in public?
