Just had telephone conversations with Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel and defensive end Kevin Kooyman. Tuel says the Cougars, beaten in 22 of their last 25 games, are “fed up” with losing.
For the Sept. 4 opener at Boone Pickens Stadium, Washington State is matched with Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are two-touchdown favorites.
The Cougar program is only seven seasons removed from having played in a BCS bowl (the January 2003 Rose Bowl loss to Oklahoma), but various national publications rate Washington State among the worst teams in all of Division I-A.
Last season, the Cougars were 1-11. They were outscored 462-144. They rushed for less than 900 yards while giving up more than 2,800. Opponents averaged a staggering 7.1 yards per play. Washington State’s offensive line allowed 53 sacks, while the Cougar defense mustered only 13.
In 12 games last season, Washington State managed only 18 touchdowns.
