We Got Lucky

It's a good thing that Tulsa was awarded the 2007 PGA Championship instead of the 2008 PGA Championship.
Why? Because the 2008 PGA was held at the same time as the Olympics and golf tournament coverage seems to have gotten lost in the shufffle.
The Sporting News does a daily on-line sports section and the story about Padraig Harrington winning the PGA was on Page Six. Page Six!
A couple of other observations:
It was so hot (hottest major in history) at the PGA Championship in 2007 that short britches were mandatory for everyone except the golfers (dress code, you know). During this year's PGA championship, it was cool enough that golfers wore long sleeves and pull-overs. Go figure.
Ben Curtis has a neat deal with an apparel company to wear the colors and logos of NFL teams while playing in tournaments. Curtis usually tries to fly the colors of the NFL team that is nearest, which means that he wore Detroit Lions apparel during the final round. That's got to be bad karma, considering that the Lions haven't done much of anything since George Plimpton, although Curtis played well enough to be in the hunt.
Looking for somebody to be the new king of the jungle while Tiger Woods is on injured reserve? That would be Paddy Harrington. He's won three of the last six majors, including two in a row and two at the expense of still major-less Sergio Garcia.

The luck was not in not being in contention with the Olympics, but in having Tiger in the field. Can you imagine a sponsor being eager to foot the bill for a tournament without him?
Mickelson, Els, Singh...where were they at British Open, PGA. Can't even contend when he's not there. Unfortunately, without Tiger...ho hum.
Makes Olympic rowing looks exciting.
