Here comes a news flash.

First, a review of this week's basketball analysis.

Monday, it was written here that the OU basketball team was fading and that OSU was rising: OU scores 40-something in losing twice; OSU wins at Missouri.

Thank you for being impressed.

Guess what, numerous people still think OU is an NCAA tournament team. This pretty funny premise is based on the RPI, the dumbest thing in sports, which gives the same importance to early season games as it does to late season games. This is goofy because the teams are not the same, the players are not the same, the NCAA tournament is not in December, it's in March and April. If OU is in the tournament, which we sincerely hope happens, we'll blog from the wagering line in Vegas.

Now, the news flash.

This city has a glorious new arena going up downtown. It is spectacular in appearance, all glass and class. But we have gone a little over the top in announcing attractions coming to town. A press conference seems to be called by the Mayor when a sink goes in a rest room. The latest press conference was to announce an NBA exhibition game.

The news flash details where exhibition NBA basketball currently ranks in the sporting scheme of things.

88. Ping Pong regional finals.

89. Kite flying semi-finals.

90. Tailgate cookoff.

91. Croquet finals.

92. Kid bird calls on Letterman.

93. NBA basketball exhibition.

94. Marble shooting nationals.

Come on, people, there's a big world out there; been there for quite some while, too.

NIT PICKER......(cause you know he is going to say something) Too much time on your hands at that library security job? Tired of those college kids that keep putting crap in a bag and lighting it on fire just to watch you stomp it out? Maybe its one too many drops of super glue on your night stick when your eating that footlong coney at 2am? Dont you worry only 8 short months until the fair is in town and you get on part time again being the pixey dust speader on the tilt-a-whirl!!

Does the RPI make sense to anybody?
RB (5 years ago)
Your Pickerness, couldn't help but notice the following dig: "This pretty funny premise is based on the RPI, the dumbest thing in sports, which gives the same importance to early season games as it does to late season games. This is goofy because the teams are not the same, the players are not the same, the NCAA tournament is not in December, it's in March and April." OK, you're right - let's do it your way. Let's just IGNORE results of games from early in the season. In fact, let's not even play 'em! Let' just wait till January and play conference games only. Better yet, let's just wait till March and play the tournament - brilliant! And why stop there? In football, let's just skip the regular season and go straight to the bowl games, based on preseason polls. Why mess all those games in October and November? Guys could get hurt, for crying out loud! Same thing in Major League Baseball and the NBA - just start the season with an All-Star break, and play a couple of weeks before starting the playoffs. The season's too dang long anyway! And in golf, forget about the Masters in April - who's playing good golf then? Let's just wait till September and have The Tour Championship winner be the fourth major! I mean, that has to be the best golf of the year becuse it's the last tournament, right? And the Daytona 500 in February? Cancel the darn thing - how good can those drivers be running in the first race of the year? Just skip straight to that Race for the Cup or whatever it's called and be done with it! I tell you, I think you're on to something!!

The NCAA tournament selection committee does take into account performance late in the year, in addition to RPI and other factors. I wouldn't worry too much about it, picker.
Mike (5 years ago)
I know how the RPI works... Its a mathematical formula that is so long and complicated and confusing it allows a bunch of suits to go into a room in Indy, close the door, and shove the 7th place team from the Big Televen down our throats each year.

And your list is in error, Mr. Picker. The only thing worse than NBA exhibition is NBA regular season.

ARBY:

That's an awfully long entry to have missed the point entirely. All the games count, because a win’s a win. But the RPI is a sham because not all wins are equal…or an equal evaluation of how good a team is at the end of year. (And that’s all the selection committee is trying to do…determine who’s better than whom at the end of the year). With the RPI system, an 18-10 team would be considered better than another 18-10 because they – not to name names – beat Gonzaga on a “neutral” court in December. Even though that unnamed team has lost, say, five of their last eight or so.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
RB: The nuttiness of the RPI system is made clear by the fact that OU is STILL considered an NCAA tournament team after scoring 45 twice.

OU was a tournament team in December.

Things changed.

Early games should matter, but not nearly as much as late games; say, a third as much.

Note to RB: Football and basketball are different sports.

the only problem with OSU is that they're not a very balanced team. Put them up against a team with a couple of decent (and tall) inside guys and some pretty good guards, and OSU has no chance. Almost all of their talent is in the guards, which admittedly worked against KU. But I dont think they can consistently win with the kind of lineup they have. Marcus Dove is awesome, but Thomas....not so much. They need two good inside guys.
OU is in a free fall, but they might get their groove back at home, we'll have to see. That's what the football team always did last season.

World Picker:

Yes, there is something dumber than the RPI in sports: World Picker. But I seem to be repeating myself.

Eric: how many times did you stomp the flaming bag before you figured it out? and how do you know what college kids do? since it is clear you didn't attend college.

World Picker:
Bobby Baldwin, Steve Wynn, et al, have made a lot of $$$ having chumps like you standing in a line at Vegas. How many times do you jump off one team and on another while standing in line?

You are right, though, there is a big world out there. It's summer in Buenos Aires, 85 degrees, sunny.
I'll write if I find work.
Hope you are fired when I get back.
Whats the deal? (5 years ago)
I'm not even a fan of the NBA, but I wouldn't mind catching an exhibition game here in T-Town. I don't know why you have to diss on it. Sure, maybe the press conferences are a bit showy but who cares? If you think NBA Exhibition games are lame, don't go. Why is this blog worthy? Sure its a big world, so why don't you move away if you think it is so lame that we think its cool we get to see some NBA action?
Mark V (5 years ago)
World Picker, congratulations on having the edge in forsight. OU is fading fast while OSU is surging at the right time. The Nebraska game where OU scored 12 points in the first half was matched in futility by Texas A&M's 10-point disaster.

I don't think OU should get too much credit for beating a team at home that is fading faster than the Sooners.

Wednesday's Bedlam rematch will be fun to watch. After watching the Neb - OSU game, I still stand by my pick last week that OSU wins by nine points.
Matthew (5 years ago)
The Picker can write all of the columns he pleases, but the fact is if OU finishes 8-8 in conference they WILL be in the field of 65. Until the Picker becomes a member of the selection committee, he and all of the other talking heads are nothing but hot air.
steve (5 years ago)
I'm an OU fan, and I wouldn't have been surprised if OU lost by more than that....even before I knew that Blake Griffin was out. I think OU might be NCAA worthy, but the way OSU's playing, I dont know if North Carolina could beat them in Stillwater. (ok maybe that's an exaggeration)
Matthew (5 years ago)
Yeah, Steve, I'd say that's an exaggeration.

Two comments on this blog:

The media and other, assorted "powers that be" are in lust with the Big XII in nearly all sports. Their W/L is viewed as premiere. OU is considered an automatic pre-season Top-Whatever and has a free pass to the NCAA Tournament. (Along with five more Big XII teams.)

I don't care a bit about NBA. What I DO care about is the wide variety of events being signed for the BOK Center!

There is something for pretty much everyone already, with an eclectic spread of talents and events that should be able to attract everyone with two nickles to rub together to buy a ticket.

I loves me some Tulsa!!! And everything that gets us back in the game!

HOLDER IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM - The biggest problem OSU Basketball has right now is Mike Holder. His jaw never stops flapping about Gundy, football ticket prices, football attendance, football patience, etc.... He can't seem to find time to spit out a few words of support for Sean and his Team - HE ISN"T SUPPORTING THE PLAYERS. If he had been supportive of Sean during the recent stretch of success I'm sure OSU would have sold more tickets for the recent Nebraska game. Why is Holder is so concerned about ticket sales for football, and proping up Gundy? Why isn't he equally supportive of the Basketball Team and program? Why isn't he promoting more ticket sales for the University and Basketball program by voicing his approval of the recent job Sean is doing? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MIKE HOLDER!?!

Did Texas lose to Bob's Kid? If so, the BIG 2 conference should concider itself lucky to get anyone to the tournament. When does football start so we can start caring about sports again?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Dean Blevins said the OU women's basketball team was on the way up.

Up to where, lunch?

WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Bill is correct.

The Big 12 is the most overrated conference in sports history.

It has been number two in the hoop RPI.

That's nuts. Were the Big 12 to hook up with the Big East members, the carnage would be shocking.

Beyond Kansas (no Final Four ever for Self), and Texas, no team is in sight of the top 25!

Why is it so overrated in all sports?

Guess I'll see ya in Vegas Picker. I can think of worse places to watch the tournament... Come to think of it, I can't think of a better place to watch the tournament. That would be a win-win. See ya there!

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
