OU versus Texas in the Cotton Bowl:

Sure, it's a few months off. But going by what's in the news -- senior golf, tennis, doggy college baseball, HGH ball, 20-point NBA games -- it's never too early to talk football.

OU-Texas is, for all intents and purposes, for a berth in the Bogus Collegiate Scheme title game. The Big Ten has become the laughing stock of college football. It's like mud wrestling. Nobody in Florida plays defense. USC appears evil. The Big East is an ESPN creation.

As long as the head coaches stay where they are, you could pick the next OU-Texas winner the day after the October game.

Outside of recruiting Vince Young, Mack Brown has done nothing to distinguish himself in terms of being a big game coach. He is better known, in fact, as being the king of the also-ran bowls, beating bums with regularity in meaningless junk like the Holiday Bowl.

Across the field from Stoops, he's a classic Nervous Nellie.

On the OU side, the rest of America doesn't seem too interested in hiring away Venables, who can't stop an upper-level running quarterback. The Sooners need to mix in a few thousand salads and return to speed over the blob look.

The chief concern on offense is surprisingly enough quarterback Bradford, who isn't known for taking a punch, or for his speed.

Still and all, unless the Texas quarterback has picked up a half a dozen new moves since we saw him last, the Mush Factor picks the winner here, Mack melts in the heat again.

Clip and save: OU by 11.

You are right about the score but totally wrong about the reasons. Like most football games, the outcome will be determined on the lines, not by the coaches or QBs.

Thanks Jay.

I respect your handicapping in the OU TX series.

Thanks for not tickling the palettes of the OU-haters by taking a cheap shot at us like calling our coach 'Medium Game Bob'.

I don't blame Venables for any of the losses, however I do see a lack of tackling fundamentals in the D backfield.

Dance OU puppet fans, dance!
Your opinion of Poor Mack is right on the dollar. He's a good guy, great recruiter, but not a showtime coach. He couldn't win championships at North Carolina and he can't win them in Austin. Anyone who watched Texas' Rose Bowl victory realizes that coaching didn't win the game for the Longhorns...Vince Young's pure athletic skills did. And, to set the record straight, if WCO doesnt' blame Venables for the sorry condition of the Oklahoma defense, he hasn't watched Oklahoma closely. Most insiders, although they will not publicly admit it, do blame him. The problems have been too consistent for too long to place blame elsewhere.

Mack "can't win championships"...? Did I miss something... didn't he win a title at Texas?

And I find it interesting that OU fans dismiss Mack's MNC because "Vince Young won it."

Well - it's funny... I haven't seen 'ol Stoops lift that crystal football over his head since Josh Heupel's eligibility ran out.

So I guess Stoops gets credit for getting Heupel to campus to help him win a title, but Mack DOESN'T get credit for getting VY to town... is that how it works?!
Epphan (5 years ago)
Nice attempt, Jeff. But just like a Colt McCoy pass, it falls short. Fact is, in the Stoops era, Brown has done nothing outside of VY's athletic talent. Want to give Mack credit for recruiting Young? Go ahead. They can print it at the top of Brown's obituary.
jj (5 years ago)
VY won that game & carried that team period. Ask any Texas "insider" VY ran the plays VY wanted to run etc. They had talent around him, but Brown let him take the reigns. Otherwise Brown would have snared defeat from the hands of victory several times, in pure Mack Brown fashion.
Jeff...you need work on your reading comprehension. Heupel led the Sooners to the 2000 National Title game...he didn't win it for them. The Sooners allowed a high-scoring Seminole team only 3 points...that had nothing to do with Heupel. Heupel was playing that game (and, essentially, all of November) with a swollen elbow in his throwing arm which severely limited his effectiveness; Vince Young WAS the Longhorn offense. While winning the National Title game against USC, Young overcame the 38 points allowed by his own defense. I mean, did you see the game? And you can try to defend the point that Mack is a 'winner' if you'd like, but it will only make you appear ignorant. Check your facts before you make an ass of yourself. Now, pass the remote.

Bradford won't take many punches with that offensive line.

Maybe you need to work on your own reading comprehension and/or analytical skills before calling me names.

I'm fully aware of what happened in both the 2000 national title game and the Texas-USC title game.

The POINT is that had it not been for Josh Heupel, OU wouldn't have even been PLAYING for the national title that year. They would have lost 3, maybe 4 games in the regular season.

And AGAIN - why does a given coach not get credit for RECRUITING great players?

I can assure you that Lord Stoops would not be winning Big 12 titles if he were coaching Baylor's players. But somehow he gets CREDIT for bringing in great players where as Mack doesn't? That's brillant.

Here's the point -- and I'll spell it out very deliberatly so that you can understand:

You're giving Mack grief for winning 1 title with one player/group of players.

Stoops has 1 title with one player/group of players. Outside of that, he's basically won a few Big 12 titles and then gone on to get blown away in BCS bowls.

So maybe you're the one who should work on putting together a coherant thought instead of letting your hatred of Texas cloud your brain.
Why am I wasting my time with you, Jeff? No one could contest Brown's ability to recruit; he's rivaled only by Switzer during his heyday. That isn't the point. When you whine about not giving Mack 'credit' for recruiting, you're beating a non-existent horse. And if you're comparing Heupel to Vince Young, you're truly thick. Heupel was valuable, unquestionably, but he was no Vince. Vince had to overcome the bumbling offensive machinations of Greg Davis and the baffling on-field decisions of Mack. And how long has Brown been in a head coaching position? Many more than Stoops. So you can't fairly compare the two in terms of who is a winner and who is not. Apples and oranges, little man. Give it up.

Since you're clearly incapable of understanding abstract concepts, such as comparisons and relativity, I'll just stop right here.

You're clearly of the lowest common denomenator mentality of "Lord Stoops/OU = good; everything else = bad", so I can see how you would not understand my posts.

Best of luck with that.

Hey keep on ragging Mack and Texas will got get a young lion then OU will never win. OU doesn't have the resources that Texas does and should never win based on that.
Hey PMS, Oklahoma has always had the same reserve of talent that Texas has had...it's called Texas. Where have you been? Wilkinson raided north Texas (Jimmy Harris, Hog Harrison, Jerry Tubbs, Jakie Sandefer), Switzer made his rep off of imports and Stoops hasn't done badly either. Oh, and Jeff, take a hike, you moron.
Blurt (5 years ago)
so the 2006 minus VY, Texas lost...oh okay, you're wrong. Both good coaches, good programs, good rivalry. Bad journalism...

You can say one thing about Mack: He certainly doesn't embarrass the Big XII in BCS games when he plays in them. And at last count they have won an equal amount of BCS games. Mack 2-0; Stoops 2-4.
