Wednesday's OU football news: When do disciplinary actions and defections become signs of disarray?
Published: 5/10/2012 12:04 AM

Last weekend, Oklahoma receiver Kameel Jackson was the 12th man.

By Wednesday night, he was part of the forlorn four.

Over the weekend, Jackson took to Twitter to say he was transferring to Texas A&M -- the 12th scholarship player to leave Norman since last winter was headed to the home of the 12th Man.

A few days later, Jackson's "Twitter" (Thanks, John Hoover) had a pretty solid explanation -- Jackson, along with starting receivers Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks and defensive back Quentin Hayes were all suspended indefinitely by OU coach Bob Stoops.

(Read our story here).

At this point, Sooners quarterback Landry Jones must be wondering if he can apply for the supplemental NFL draft. Receiver Kenny Stills and his 77.2 yards per game from last season return, but after that -- without the forlorn four -- the pickings are pretty slim.

You better hope freshman Trey Metoyer is more than just a spring practice warrior.

OU coach Bob Stoops addressed the issue of player entitlement after last year's Insight Bowl. (Guerin Emig blogs about it here).

Stoops, it appears, is trying to fight the good fight. But at what point do all the disciplinary actions and defections indicate a program slipping into disarray?

If you tilt your head and squint a little bit, how much different does the Oklahoma football program look from its Red River neighbor to the south.

Blue chip players by the bushel. Check.

A BCS championship. Check.

A recent rash of discipline issues. Check.

Player defections. Check.

Coaching turnover. Check.

The only thing missing so far for Oklahoma is the dramatic dip in on-field success. That wasn't supposed to come this season either for the Sooners, who are a trendy top 5 pick in some preseason polls.

But how realistic is that ranking if two starting receivers miss any significant time?

Stoops, it seems, has spent the entire offseason drawing the line for his players. Sooner fans have to hope he didn't start too late.

The receivers would not have been starters this year. Jazz would have been the only one to even be a backup. There is too much talent coming in at that position. That talent is there becasue they recruited hard due to a lack of production from these guys. OU had the #1 receiver recruiting class. The backup safety is a bigger hit than losing these guys. They only started/played becasue we didn't have anyone else.

"Sooners quarterback Landry Jones must be wondering if he can apply for the supplemental NFL draft."

He can go play in Canada. If he plays next season like he did the end of last season, that's where he's headed anyway. And the loss of experienced receivers certainly isn't going to help him turn it around.
Good point, Prophet. I'm sure they recruited all those receivers because they knew something like this might happen.

But those guys still have to play. I wouldn't be as worried about the level of talent at receiver as the learning curve.

The bad apples need tossed out before they spoil the barrel.
I doubt that the program is in disarray, but the faces sure are changing. The turnover would be alarming at most other schools but OU seems to have a pretty deep well of talent. Stoops always said if kids dont want to play here, his way, there are talented kids that would love to take their place. As I have commented over the last couple days, whatever this guys did would be swept under the rug at most schools, its news here because Stoops takes action.

Let's face it. The players these days believe they are entitled to a starting position, can go to class when they want, workout when they want, practice when they want.

I remember Louisville B-Ball coach saying that the times have changed. Kids do not want to be coached they want to be pampered.

It is my estimation that this a generational problem.

Look back just five years and you did not see this kind of irreverence to authority.

Supposedly, Kameel Jackson, a likeable kid, quit going to his classes during the months of spring practice.

OU is not in disarray just look at the problems of our SEC brethern schools and WVU.

Its a crazy world and the authoritative voice is getting played like a fool.

Off Thread: How about the rumor that Clemson and FSU want to join the big 12?
Thanks for the feedback.

Rapid Robert, I don't disagree with your thoughts. My question would be at what point do you take those issues of entitlement into your recruiting process. Or is there even a way to do a better job of recruiting players who "buy into" your system?

Colhi64, I'm not sure what to make of the Florida State-Big 12 story. As John Hoover pointed out in his blog today, it seems a lot like the A&M-SEC story -- a faction of the school leadership and fan base think it's a good idea and are trying to make it happen.

I'll blog more thoughts tomorrow.
