Weeden joins fraternity that Fenimore started

Some things are just meant to be.

Brandon Weeden became the first player to pass OSU to a victory in Austin since Bob Fenimore -- and it happened in a season when OSU players are honoring the memory of Fenimore.

On Nov. 11, 1944, Fenimore threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Cecil Hankins as OSU rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat Texas 13-8. The Horns led 8-0 in the fourth, but Fenimore faked a punt on a fourth-and-one play to spark the comeback. The Cowboys never crossed midfield before that.

Cowboy players are wearing decals on their helmets this season to pay tribute to Fenimore, who died in July. Fenimore, OSU’s first football All-American, was 84.

Ever OSU passer since Fenimore lost in Austin until Weeden broke the hex Saturday night. Weeden threw for 409 yards at Texas’ expense and drew raves from UT coach Mack Brown.

Maybe we all have become accustomed to Weeden's "unbelievable" video game like-numbers, but I disappointed by his performance against Texas. The interception he threw was terrible. He also fumbled, was sacked a couple of times, and at times, he didn't show enough urgency in the pocket. Overall, I'd grade him a "B minus."

It's true, he didn't have a great game, but if not for several drops by the receivers his numbers would have been even more gaudy. Thank goodness it was a lousy Texas team.

I don't know if it has been mentioned in previous articles on the magnificent Fenimore, but he had a physical impediment that prevented him from bending properly into a three-point stance. On the track team he had to start running the dashes from a standup position.

PS. I hope it was a typographical error that caused the 'y' to be dropped from "every" in the next to last sentence.

This is a technicality, but the time without a win in Austin is overstated when you say every every passer since Fenimore lost in Austin. Really, they did not all lose there because the did not all get to play there. None won there either for the same reason, but they only played there what 10 or 11 times over the course of those 66 years?
