Weeden’s age an asset for Oklahoma State

There seems to be a fascination with Brandon Weeden’s age.

Before every Oklahoma State game, writers who cover the opposing team will ask questions about the 27-year-old Weeden, and how a married and significantly older guy blends with 19-year-old teammates.

As it turns out, Weeden best assets are his arm and his age. He has handled success in a mature manner. When speaking with reporters, he never says anything that would disappoint Mike Gundy or provoke the opponent.

Weeden seems to be a popular figure within the program. Coaches and teammates rave about his leadership qualities.

In his first season as the starting quarterback, Weeden is 3-0 in road games. The Cowboys won at Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech and Kansas State.

Saturday’s assignment is different – a game at Texas’ 100,119-seat Royal-Memorial Stadium.

“I’m excited about it,” Weeden said. “Any time you get to play in front of 100,000 people, it’s fun. I feed off of that energy and have fun with it.”

And, by the way, do you think that maybe the Sporting News’ college football staff might be a bit stunned to see that OSU is a 6½-point favorite at Texas? During the summer, this was the Sporting News’ take on the 2010 Cowboys: “Oklahoma State will finish last in the South, and coach Mike Gundy will be forced out. Next in line in Stillwater: former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.”

Last week, it was announced that Gundy is one of seven finalists for the Bobby Dodd national coach of the year award.

Brandon Weeden for President!

Bill, I'd forgotten about the Sporting News piece. I remember reading it and not knowing if I should become angry or laugh it off. Dodd is a tool.

Weeden is one cool customer.

Weeden's ability to be a cool customer is a function of the O-line keeping the defense off of him. Major props to O-line coach Joe Wickline!

Good point Bart.
