Welcome to basketball season

I love college basketball, but it always takes me a little while to get into the hoops spirit.

I got my first taste of in-person college basketball this season at Oral Roberts on Thursday night, catching a little bit of the Golden Eagles' big win over Texas Tech.

I like Billy Gillispie as a basketball coach and have no doubt he'll be successful at Texas Tech, but it probably won't be this season.

That being said, there's no such thing as a bad 16-point win over a Big 12 opponent for Oral Roberts.

It was my first trip inside the Mabee Center, and it's a great spot for basketball. The crowd was listed as 9,303, although there weren't that many people there (some seats in the sold-out lower bowl were not occupied).

But it was a nice crowd, even if they were a little quiet at times.

Oral Roberts is athletic and looks like they're peaking at the right time. I guess, given their respective current states, we can see why Tulsa and Oral Roberts couldn't agree on a date for their game this season.

While Oral Roberts has become something of a feel-good story nationally and Oklahoma looks solid under first-year coach Lon Kruger, the news isn't so bright at Oklahoma State and Tulsa.

But there's still plenty of time left to turn things around. For now, we'll stay positive. It's Christmas after all.
