What A Crock

If a basketball coach takes a job at a school that is not as good as where he is, the brilliant philosophy of Groucho or Will Rogers, or both, comes to mind: Who would want anybody who would do anything THAT dumb around?

While on the subject of a bunch of bull: What is this nonsense about a basketball program being unable to succeed at a football factory?

Believing in such garbage is like running away from tough competition.

Ever hear of Florida?

Ever hear of OU?

Ever hear of Texas?

Michigan? Ohio State?

Hoop coaches at football factories who so much as pretend to consider lesser jobs had better be trying to rake in more cash at the place where they are.

Otherwise, get 'em outta here.

Mr. Picker, is there a translation of the Grocho/Rogers reference available?
The Picker (4 years ago)
Gene-o: The thought of Capel even looking at Arizona on the map got me irate. Who would want to work for anybody who would hire me -- that's the idea from Groucho. Who would want to keep anybody who would think about going to the cactus patch.

The source of the story is some neighborhood shopper. Perhaps it was confirmed by Thrifty Nickel, who knows.

Some big races(horse)coming up, give me your picks next week, so I can either:

Go with you.

X them out.

Mr Picker, I think Capel will end up on the right coast. Maybe next year. Since the place horse in the Derby always comes out of Keeneland, I will be watching the Blue Grass with much interest. I don't think the Arkansas Derby will produce a viable candidate for Kentucky. I will send my picks and you can cross them out . . . as you always do.

April is for fools. See you on Derby day. Enjoy the rain.

Oh, well, actually, what I meant to write was...

Pulling a stunt like this on a day like today, can only be the work of an accomplished plot twister, a epic fibber, a genius pen-toting mastermind of entertainment.

Ring in the laughs or wring out the doubt?
Bravo Picker or Over and out?

I'm not drunk.

I had clam chowder for dinner. I had nothing else to say but I wanted to write three comments.

oh wait, NOW i get it. he picks sports. i thought this was a column about playing world music on the banjo, in which his musical prowess was always expressed in sporting analogy. this explains why i could never find the audio button.

Well Pick, hate to see ya go, but all good things must end. If Vern doesn't do any good, maybe you'll get to come back. Well have a good life!!
Ignatz (4 years ago)
Keep waiting on that check, Vern. Do you really think the Picker got paid?

Somebody stole an image and left the "i" out of his name.

robin....jeez, I think we've figured that out. Do you think by any stretch of the imagination the Picker would announce anything but his mighty prowess on this site?

Vern, from an Ironhead to a Bulldog...I would be interested in investing in 'Vern's Place'. I would expect it to have that noted eastern Oklahoma flare for the dramatic in the decorations.

As Gene already knows, and as any Daily Racing Form reader will tell you...don't ever expect a horse to run a time that his bloodline has never run or the horse has never run in his career...you get to keep some change in your pocket if you follow that simple rule.
robin segal (4 years ago)
Dash, I do not think everybody figured that out. Why did people wish him well?

Also, on the horse time thing, I think you mean run a faster BEYER figure, not a faster TIME. Right? Any fan paying attention with a quarter of their brain knows that speed varies by track, and often colts appear on new tracks and run much faster if they are fast tracks. Also, now that we have artificial dirt all over the place, we cannot compare times between three year olds and the members of their bloodlines. But, you know, I guess that is what you MEANT, right?
Dash Riprock (4 years ago)
Robin, yes on the same surface, be it dirt or grass, not artificial surfaces.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
