What About All Those Raises at OU Now?
Published: 7/11/2007 2:13 PM
Last Modified: 7/11/2007 2:13 PM

Say what you will about former OU coach Howard Schnellenberger, he didn't finish winless, the Sooners' record after the '05 forfeit counter-punch was delivered.

True, the extension of the sanctions and the forfeit order isn't the end of the world. All that really matters now is getting to play in a bowl (as long as the foe doesn't act up like Boise and pass too well).

Here's what having to forfeit a year's worth of games is: embarrassing.

Here's some good news, maybe: Hopefully the NCAA will be consistent and take a similar forfeit hammer to media darlings, say, on the west coast.

All this does make a person wonder about the timing of all those raises. Rewarding a staff and administration for forfeits? Patience pays.

I only hope USC gets the same punishment. I don't think the NCAA has the guts to do it. That story has just kind of vanished.

Just because the NCAA vacates the 2005 wins - does not mean that they did not happen......sort of like inadmissable evidence......it happened, you just have to pretend that it didn't.
worldpicker (6 years ago)
Exactly, Tab: that USC mess at least sounds worse from, afar, doesn't it. The NCAA HAS to be consistent now.

I guess what the NCAA is saying with the forfeits, Linda, is it went on too long.

One main vibe to come from the extension and forfeits is: It needs to be 100 percent pure in all sports!

The Reggie Bush situation is completely different:
a) It was Reggie's family, not Reggie
b) It was completely independent of USC (i.e., not a work program that 'SC is supposed to monitor)
c) USC has been fully compliant with the NCAA so far
d) OU fans have to get over the orange bowl spanking. You lost, big time. Jason White is the least-deserving Heisman. Deal with it.

Jimmie: It's okay for a player's family to get stuff a regular student's family can't get?

The NCAA is a farce. They proved it by the way they handled the Duke Lacrosse situation. Duke, not the NCAA, had suspended the lacrosse season and players last year because of the rape allegations. The players all sued Duke because they lost a year of eligibility. To avoid paying a large lawsuit that would have decimated their athletic programs, Duke asked the NCAA to give the students another year of eligibilty even though the students played half the season. The other ACC presidents all wrote letters to the NCAA supporting this request. Duke basketball is big money in the ACC and also in the NCAA. Most of the ACC schools don't even play lacrosse. The NCAA in record time granted the request. Travesty of justice.

Just wait until some player sues the NCAA for a salary, or a cut of the revenue from gear sold, shirts with some kid's name on the back. The NCAA does seem to make up rules on the fly.

Vacate is different than forfeit dude. It's 0-4, not 0-12. Do your homework before popping off.

Concerning the forfeits, or the blotting of the games from the '05 record, do ticket holders get their money back?

worldpicker (6 years ago)
Let's see, if you lose four, and forfeit all your wins, four plus eight.....

So the NCAA is about as clear in its wording as it is in its policy.

The eight games were erased?< p>

Like a blackboard by a kid made to stay after school?

Vacating the wins changes everything.

More raises!

ed (6 years ago)
the monitoring staff missed the three players cheating, not stoops. When stoops find out, he killed them off the team. A raise for integrity isn't a bad thing is it?
worldpicker (6 years ago)
The NCAA is now officially a joke.

Vacate a win?

Crooks on TV vacate the premesis.

How do you vacate a win? Get hypnotized? What do teams OU played that year do, vacate a loss

worldpicker (6 years ago)
A raise for integrity is a great idea.

The faculty would undoubtedly agree.

On to more serious matters: Can we rush the Texas quarterback?

JJ (6 years ago)
Hum, that changes things for the future by what? I think most OU fans would like to vacate Boar form recent memory. As long as the wins are being vacated does that make Texas Tech a moral vacate or what? Also lets get real, the big question is what happens to the money from the holiday bowl?
JJ (6 years ago)
Also, Reggie Bush didnt know his family was taking money? USC didnt know.... Hum, lets see, Billy Bob's parents move from the 2 room apt he & his 5 family members were raised in OKC into a 12 room home in Nichols Hills & he doesnt know how. Coach Stoops says he has no idea that all of a sudden BillyBobs family lives next door to a big OU donor or that an agent sist with them at team/family functions. Give me a break, SC knew, Bush knew & Snoop, Nick Lachey & Will ferrel all knew when they were rubbing elbows on the sidelines.
stogdiddy (6 years ago)
Since the almighty Sooners are giving raises to all those wrong-doing athletic officials, they might as well be consistent and send Kelvin Sampson a stipend for his NCAA violations and for leaving that basketball program in rubble.

JJ and stogdiddy are my new hero's!!!

As a Sooner fan, I'd say that the penalties handed down by the NCAA were about what was expected. When compared to the 18-20 scholarships lost and TV/postseason bans of the 90's, it's not that bad. AND, IN MY OPINION, IT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN. The punishment fits the crime here.

Now, as the picker states, the NCAA must be consistent. Bob Stoops and Co. kicked the players off the team as soon as the infractions were found. Should they have been found earlier? Probably...but that is indeed what OU is getting penalized for...failure to monitor. Boren says that they did monitor correctly (thus the appeal), and maybe they did...but I think they should just let it rest. If OU had found the infractions and hid it, then we have another issue. USC must be investigated for the alleged payments that the Bush family received. If it was just a stupid booster and USC had no idea, then the penalty should be close to OU's. If USC knew and never reported it, then throw the book at them.

What is scary is that any player or booster can bring embarassment to every major university that competes in sports. If I were a coach, wins and losses would cause my hair to fall out. BUT I WOULD LOSE SLEEP worrying about my players' actions when my staff is not holding their hand during monitored activities.

Did the coaches earn those raises? I suppose not. But those raises are designed to keep the coaches from looking elsewhere as much as they are rewards for good seasons. Besides, Stoops and his staff did perhaps their best coaching jobs this past year considering all that went wrong before and during the season. I know you don't agree picker...so just spare me the words on this.

As for rushing the Texas qb...good question. I'd say the holes left at DE are at the top of the list of defensive concerns. The db's better have improved if the DE's aren't adequate pass rushers, that's for certain.

How about all those offensive weapons? I was just looking at the depth chart. The talent this Sooner team returns on offense is staggering. If the new qb plays good, smart football...and the monster TE's get used just moderately...then I don't see how this bunch can be kept from averaging less than 30 a game. The list of playmakers in the skill positions is just staggering. How's this for a prediction: If the new qb finishes in the top 3 in effeciency in the Big 12 AND the OU pass D finishes in the top 3, they win the NC. The rest of the team is just that good.

Quick everyone...take a glance at any football record book you want...now, turn to the page showing OU's record in 1972. It will not reflect any forfitures a la NCAA for the Kerry Jacson scandal, nor will it reflect a forfited Sugar Bowl game. Everyone knows what happened; even Paterno said "everyone knows who won the game." The more reputable lists might...MIGHT...indicate an asterisk by those games but the 'W' still appears. My point? Nothing will change, significantly. If you took time to listen to the audio of the news conference, some writer from Texas asked why it took so long - 12 weeks - to hand down this decision. Has this knucklehead been following the Reggie Bush farce? The NCAA has been "investigating" him for almost two years. What a farce. And regarding Bush..."Jimmie" needs to get his facts straight. It wasn't just Bush's family...Little Reg' was ridin' around in a Humvee, which is also "under investigation." And who the h*ll do you think was living in that house in LA with the family, at least on weekends, Jimmie Boy?
Max (6 years ago)
Is the NCAA not governed by representatives of it's member institutions? If it is not going a good job, whose fault is that?
WG (6 years ago)
No...it's independent.
worldpicker (6 years ago)
It's independent, unless you're USC.

WG (6 years ago)
Point well made.
Max (6 years ago)
It's independent? It seems that when I read articles about NCAA conventions they are attended by representatives of member institutions. I believe membership is voluntary. Why was the NCAA formed? Why is it needed? Probably for the benefit of the majority of the members. Otherwise, why is it able to exist?
