What Ever Happened to the Right Way?
Published: 12/30/2010 1:32 PM

The lasting image from OSU's victory over Arizona is of the star Cowboy receiver showboating his way into the end zone.

This kind of behavior says: Look here. It's all about me. It's not about the fine quarterback, the blockers, the defenders. It's about an individual over team. Here I am. Bring on the spotlight.

Some NFL hotdog did the same silly thing last week.

Where has this nonsense come from? TV of course. ESPN used to run a bit called Jacked Up wherein possible brain damage was celebrated. Shocking hits to the head were run in slow motion while analysts laughed it up. Now the highlights are about dunks over skill, showing off over manners.

True enough, the OSU receiver is great.

The thought at the moment is who cares.

I'm an OSU alum and fan. When JB started running along side the end zone I was kind of hoping an AZ defender would be able to swapt the ball out out JBs hands ala Leon Lett.
Barry Sanders was the epitome of class. Score a touchdown, toss the ball to the ref. Everytime. Ho Hum. Another day at the office.

I didn't like the showboating either but I find it incredulous that The Picker has used his last two columns to provide lectures on class and sportsmanship. It's kind of like Octomom preaching about birth control.

I agree with you, Ace. Barry Sanders was one of the classiest pro players. I'm tired of guys like Justin Blackmon, Ryan Broyles, DeSean Jackson, and Chad Ochocinco showing off.

I look to the Tulsa World sports section when I need guidance on class..

I'm an OSU fan and I loved it. He's the best WR in the land and he showboated a little bit.

Guess what? When you're that good, you can do stuff like that. You never know the garbage that the Zona DB's were talking. Maybe they pushed him to the brink. I for one, don't care and actually think it adds an element of entertainment that is missing in college football.

Bottom line is: If you can back it up, show off all you want.

I think all it would do is make the other team come looking for your head the next chance they get.

Wasn't it after that when JB was leveled by a blind side hit quite a ways from the ball?

If you are going to show boat, get ready to get it handed back to you.

Referees flag stuck in his pocket?

I think this showboating that Blackmon did last night is just the same as "taunting" and should have been called for a penalty. At the very least, his coach should have chewed him out for doing it. I blame both of them equally. Disgusting!

"Some NFL hotdog did the same silly thing last week." - Picker

1. His name is DeSean Jackson
2. He was running off time on the clock so his team did not have to kick off to the Giants - a smart play in such a dicey moment

Dare I say, a play you would applaud if a 'scrappy' and 'gritty' player (Wes Welker comes to mind) did the same.

If I wanted lessons in football morality, I'd read Easterbrook's ramblings every Tuesday.

Solid game analysis, too, Picker.

Well, the picker has manners! :)

Earlier in the season, OU freshman Kenny Stills essayed a flip into the end zone on what I believe was his first collegiate touchdown. It garnered a penalty.

Stills immediately received a spirited discussion from Bob Stoops, who had both hands on Stills during the discussion. A second penalty for excessive celebration has not ensued.

I know Picker's animus towards Stoops would cause that to drop from memory, but it merits being mentioned.

This is NOT a new phenomenon. Both the NFL and NCAA have found it necessary to enact rules against showboating of this nature (NCAA Rule 9-2.)

Blackmon deserved a flag for hot-dogging. Picker deserves a flag for hand wringing. I would suggest focusing on "pay to play", agents skulking with money, and outright criminality. Though more visible, boorish behavior on the field is the least of concerns.

Agree that it wasn't necessary. However, taken in context it wasn't that bad. The AZ CB was talking trash all night. After every tackle he made he strutted, flexed, and generally acted like an idiot. After he hit Bowling he walked over him. He hit Blackmon and flexed and pushed his helmet down. The hotdogging was taunting, and the AZ CB deserved it.

BTW I am sure everyone was totally emotionally composed at 20.

I'm all for letting the kids celebrate, but that was showboating. There's a difference.
Two ways to go about it — 1. Act like you have been there before, hand the ball to the ref and move on. 2. Celebrate with teammates in the end zone (high fives, whatever).
I'm OK with either of those.
The thing is, I've seen at least five games this year that have been impacted by a stupid player showboating and picking up a penalty. So, after you lose, go tell your teammates how much it was worth it to showboat. Blackmon deserved a Leon Lett or DeSean Jackson moment.
freeballnit (2 years ago)
Of course, what Blackmon did isn't nearly as classless as what TU did scoring late.
I actually don't mind teams throwing the ball late or trying to play hard to score again even if they have a big lead — BUT ONLY UNDER ONE CIRCUMSTANCE: When all bench (2nd, 3rd teamers) are in the game. They deserve to come in, run the system, play hard and maybe score. Then it's on the other team's No. 1 D to shut them up. Scoring with starters, with a big lead — classless.
Upset over boos? Really? What do you expect the other team to do, cheer you on? Because, you know, Tulsa fans have never booed an opposing team... Sheesh.
freeballnit (2 years ago)
Picker, heard Sitler knocking you on the radio today. I don't always agree with you, but I can respect you more because you avoid being a homer. It''s like the Tulsa World ranking the OU and OSU bowl games in the Top 10 of bowl games to watch. Really? I mean, I watch because I'm a fan and I leave here, but even I have enough perspective to know that neither showdown approached being Top 10 bowl worthy. And so far, you know what, I'm right. I love that OSU won, but that game was in the bag from the start.
Tulsan in Exile (2 years ago)
I agree that the OSU player’s action was classless. However, it was nothing in comparison to TU’s horrifying display, humiliating the poor, downtrodden Hawaiians, who were so innocently displaying their island customs as they danced a war dance, booed the TU team, and taunted, strutted and fouled... Yes, G.J. Kinne and Todd Graham should have their U.S. citizenship revoked, TU should be required to forfeit its bowl victory, and probably suffer the NCAA death penalty, and the entire city of Tulsa should pay reparations to the Hawaiians for inflicting more pain than they have experienced since the overthrow of their monarchy.

Mr.Picker, you're talking about the guy who thought it was OK to drive over 90 MPH at 3am with a bunch of drunk animals in his vehicle.Blackmon has the knucklehead gene in his DNA,but everything will be good for him...until he can no longer play football, then it will be the sad, cautionary tale of Justin Blackmon who will have no idea what to do with the rest of his life.

1. The picker knows it was DeSean Jackson
2. What is the color of the sky in your world? In no way was that clown running time off the clock. If you enjoy the showboating just say so, like several others have, but don't take a known clowns antics and try to pass them off as smart football.
Oh and Pick, all of this poor behavior comes from you and yours. You write about it, show it, giggle over it. Eccentricity feeds sports writers.
gus (2 years ago)
Starting to show why Blackmon wasn't heavily recruited! AZ needs to fire Mikey - bad coach, bad team. OS not a real good team either, but AZ beyond bad.
Pokefan04 (2 years ago)
Gus wins the award for dumbest comment on this page!!

Really? Justin wasn't hightly recruited because he chose a poor way to celebrate a touchdown?

Keep in mind, in high school, he was his senior class president. He was heavily involved in FCA. He made good grades. He excelled in basketball and football. He had the high praise of all his coaches and the community.

But yeah, coaches weren't knocking on his door because of the way he celebrated touchdowns. Seriously?

I cringed when I saw JB celebrating that way. I thought it deserved a penalty. We all wish he'd have flipped the ball to the ref, bumped chests with his teammates, and ran back to the sideline. But he didn't do that. We'll get over it.
Top Flight (2 years ago)
He has scored many touchdowns and should have just gave the ball to the ref as mentioned above just like Barry Sanders. Sometimes your emotions take over and you can do stupid things. Hopefully he learned from it.
