What Just Happened?

The most frequently asked question of the Picks is: How do you do it?

Here's how.

For key picks, we like to look for bums, for losers, for over-hyped overrated teams and dangerous spots, not so much prospective winners. Your Iowa State. Your Georgias. Frequently, the other side of games involving dogs or trendy teams comes up the winner.

Next, you must understand what you just saw.

For example, the Washington Redskins, not the Dallas Cowboys and the childish Romo and his grade school backwards ball cap, should be worried. Dallas should have won that one by 17. Wash scored no points. The Cowboy offensive coordination was horrendous.

Houston? Not as good as the score indicated. Seattle? Due for a clocking. New England? Nowhere near the best.

Sammy B. of the Rams looked okay. Barely. He won't have it much easier than to play Arizona at home.

A big-time winner was Pittsburgh.

In the colleges, OU is poison against a lumbering quarterback like Florida State's. Florida State didn't know where to line up and what to do after it did. If OU and Texas were to play today, we'd like OU by double figures, as the Tex qb is not all that elusive. What OU has to worry about is inconsistent play from its qb. He's a great front-runner but has looked nervous when the score is close late.

Notre Dame was better than Michigan, when the Irish quarterback got hurt, Mich took over.

Oklahoma State looked bad against Troy, barely average, great runner, nice receiver, period.

TU is as good as it can be, thin defensively.

The Big 12 has two of the worst teams in college football, Iowa State and Colorado.

The Ohio State quarterback has an arm closer to the arena league than the NFL.

The SEC took a hit with Oregon's demolition of what used to be Tennessee, but remains light years the best conference.

Boise State is gone.

The BCS is getting lucky again, as the title game will once more come down to the SEC champ versus either the Big Ten or Big 12 winner.

It's almost time to choose sides, the Punks versus the Phonies, the Multi-Millionaires versus the Billionaires, the NFL players versus the owners. In a close decision, we'll take the owners. On TV this morning, one of the punks said numerous players had pregnant wives who were worried about delivery costs when their insurance deal expired in the spring. Let's see, three million take away baby costs, they should be able to squeak by.

Here is an apology for one pick. We said that Washington State would never win another football game. Ever. In the history of its program. Saturday, Washout State defeated a Montana team by one. Sorry.

I disagree with your assertion that Notre Dame was better than Michigan. Robinson is the best player in college football and different than the typical spread/Wildcat QB Rich Rodriguez has used in the past as he has a fairly strong arm and pretty accurate, not to mention blazing fast.

The Michigan quarterback the best player in football because ESPN says so?

Please.

What was Mich last year, 3-8? What was ND, 1-12?

The Mich defense is average. The quarterback is an erratic passer. You think Mich will go undefeated? No way.

SEC champ versus Big 12 or Big Ten? Why don't we just have the SEC champ versus the SEC runner-up in a re-match for the title? I mean, the SEC is going to win the title either way, right?

Mr. Picker, you and your fans are back to complaining about the BCS and its selection process. Why not do everyone a big favor and tell us what system you would devise to assure that only the most deserving teams reach the National Championship.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Gene-o: It's so simple. Top four teams play in four major bowls.

One game after.

Number 5 or 6 will never be title worthy.

Two games instead of one will add at least some honor to the phony system we have now.

Here's a question.

Obviously, some NFL rules make no sense.

Here's another one. Why should an offensive penalty that is accepted end the game?

If a team accepts the penalty, as Wash did versus Dallas, why shouldn't Dallas get another play?

Refuse the penalty, game over.

Accept the penalty, the play is rerun.

Fair is fair.

But it can be argued: What does a fair rule have to do with the NFL?

Mr. Picker, do you mean top eight teams play in four major bowls? How does one select those top four/eight teams?
The Picker (2 years ago)
Gene-o, whew, I keep expecting you to try to sneak out of that Ryder Cup wager.

Four teams. Two major bowls.

Four is 100 percent better than two, correct?

Go by the polls, same system as now, maybe. It's not the selection system, it's the number of teams playing.....two is absurd. Somebody is going to always be left out, better #5 than #3.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Yeah, you're right, it is.

Tebow was two rushes, one yard, 11 inches.

The ND guy tossed two incomplete ducks.

It really won't get much easier than Zona at home, though, 1st and ten on the foe's 20 late, somebody make a catch. But you're right, comparably, his performance was okay-plus, or good-minus.

I am flailing and thrashing in the Slough of Despond: Picker here is more right than wrong.
Somebody throw me a cinder block.

Parting company in the continued genuflection towards the southeast.

The smurfs are dead, the smurfs are dead. Long live the frogs? They could be the next torpedo aimed at the good ship BCS (It can't go Titanic quickly enough).

Pick, you just need to title this blog "Knee Jerk Reactions." No doubt you will change your tune on many of the topics you have discussed in the near future and I highly doubt you'll own up to any of it.

So glad you pointed out one of the bums..and it was Drew Brees. My thoughts of him just dropped a few hundred notches. One commonality about most of the meatheads in the NFL is no perspective about any real issues...'Some guys are expecting babies and worried about health care coverage'... even pure yankee jock sniffer Mike from Mike and Mike on ESPN had a good laugh at that one...

Last week in the picks contest, some 1,400 entered, and I beat all but 42 of them, impossible until it happened. I didn't lose the ND/Michigan pick, I had Michigan plus the points. Learn how to talk sports before you look sillier.

Dcood, you're exactly right, that was Brees saying he didn't know NFL players could afford to have a baby! I agree, somebody wants to sack him, that would be fine.

Mr. Picker, excellent point on Denard Robinson. He is a very good runner, but an inconsistent passer. Let's note that he played Notre Dame, which has one of the worst defenses in the country. Let's wait until he plays Wisconsin, Iowa, at Ohio State, and at Penn State to see how good he really is. I see Michigan going 8-4 this season, with a 4-4 record in the Big Ten. Denard has potential; however, he needs to prove that he can play well against quality opponents, and ND isn't a quality opponent.

Sam Bradford had a good performance considering the Rams have no O-Line and the WRs have grease on their hands. If the Rams D-Lineman holds onto the football at the 5 yard line instead of pulling a Leon Lett, the Rams beat the Cards.

Excactly and precisely.

OK Picker, you've done a fair job till now. Waykno is now on the scene--have a seat! I like your sense of humor and you'll need it after I finish with you when the scores are posted.

Here is a quick test for you: regarding intentional grounding--why isn't it intentional grounding when QB's quickly spike the ball to stop the clock? There is no obvious receiver and he's between the tackles.
