What was Gundy thinking?

My name is Bobby Reid. Remember me, coach?
Matt Barnard/Tulsa World

Here are the top five stories from last weekend.

5. Quit crying over turnovers.

New England had five or ten turnovers and still beat the Bears.

Here's a unique thought: After a turnover, go stop somebody.

4. The moronic pass interference rule continues to disgrace the NFL.

There's nothing in sport this side of NASCAR, where you can make up ground during a time out, worse than a 55-yard penalty that might not have been a penalty at all.

Spotting the ball at the point of the alleged interference is dumb because:

(a) It might not have been a penalty in the first place -- about half the calls look bogus.

(b) The ball might not have been caught even without any alleged interference.

Anything alleged, or anything that assumes something, should be 15 yards, period.

3. Kansas basketball leaves us stunned.

Bill Self has assembled a NBA team at KU.

Quick, somebody dig out the tape, ORU could not have beaten this team.

We could coach KU to a final two appearance with one hand tied behind our back.

2. BCS lucks out again.

Actually it isn't the BCS selecting the competitors for the championship game -- it is ESPN.

Who can argue much with USC-Ohio State.

We give USC only a five percent chance of winning.

1. Oklahoma State football coaching leaves us queasy.

Talk about coaching up the imperfect storm.

Oklahoma State's offense was working so well, the coaches had to rehaul it for the OU game.

Alternating quarterbacks and putting in a new offensive set -- that's what you do if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

As a brief aside, how about that OU offense.

If Tom Brady played for this outfit, they'd make him a safety.

Getting back to Oklahoma State's performance:

Raise the ticket prices?

Change one of the best offenses in the country?

Oklahoma State fans deserve better than that.

If somebody wants to tinker with anything, check the next staff meeting of coaches.

Mr. Picker, I wonder how anyone could write about the "Top Stories" from the weekend and not mention the termination of Larry Coker at Miami? That was a total disgrace. He won a National Championship while there and almost won it a second time in double over-time.

It would be interesting to see what the criteria is for that position?

world picker (6 years ago)
You may almost have a point, save for the facts that Miami has no attendance and no skills and a disgusting reputation.

What does being a nice guy have to do with coaching?

Watch and see how quickly Coker gets snapped up for a major head coaching job.

Coker looks like a defensive co-ordinator at Dartmouth, somewhere like that.

Quit crying over turnovers? Quit crying over bad calls!
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Coker's firing at Miami is somewhat questionable, since he was about 5 yrs removed from a NC, and almost back to back NC's. But, college football has become a coaching carousel. It's "what have you done for me 5 mins ago?". Look at Bama. Sure, Shula struggled this season, and losing at home to MSU is disgraceful (along with 5 str8 losses to Auburn). I just wonder why Alabama would fire him 1 year after extending his contract to 2012. Baffles me. AD's across the country need to realize that down years will happen. I can only assume that Miami's off (and on) the field problems had the most to do with Coker's firing.

OSU must not have leanred from history. Mack Brown tried the 2 QB system and it didn't work. It will almost never work. I understand what Robinson brings to the table, and putting him on the field WITH REID a few snaps for deception purposes might be ok. Splitting snaps between QB's just doesn't let the offense find a rythym. If coaches have to resort to that kind of deception, then they must fear they aren't good enough to win it otherwise. I agree Picker. They outsmarted themsleves.

As for OU, I completely understand Stoops' mentality in the 4th quarter. I understand that they were able to run the football at the Pokes for 3 qtrs, so they stayed with it in the 4th and let the defense win it. He's a defensive coach, so that's what he's gonna do. I was hoping to see a little creativity on the last two drives, though. I'm not talking about putting it in the air. You can run it with a little deception. Bootlegs, counters, end arounds, etc. You have to be impressed with the running game, though. And, Thompson has shown he can throw the football when needed. NU gave up over 250 to the Cowboys on the ground, so with the cold air up in KC, I expect the Sooners to do the same thing.

I think one of the top stories this weekend is the continued excellence shown by Romo of the Dallas Cowboys. I just hope he leaves that Simpson chick alone through the Super Bowl. Once he starts up that fling, he's done. How can a man possibly keep football on his mind at that point?

Early prediction: Sooners 31, Nebbish 21.

world picker (6 years ago)
I thought Dallas played Tampa last week.

I think I like Nebraska plus three and a half or four points.

It looks like a toss-up.

We'll see who is coach of the year Saturday night, won't we.

By the way, the weather could be better than you might think -- clear, 30's not that much wind.

How about the Arizona State coach mopping Mike Stoopsie all over the floor, then being fired! What must Mikey think!
Chris (6 years ago)
Texas did prove that two QBs don't work, though Florida is trying it this year too. The problem with Texas is they let the wrong QB take most of the snaps. I really think that Mack Brown's first national championship could have come sooner if he played Major Applewhite day in and day out. He'd also would have had more success against OU.

And if coaches were fired for down years, where would Joe Paterno be now?
world picker (6 years ago)
The obvious problem with elderly coaches is they bring about negative recruting.
world picker (6 years ago)
What about those playing, in a legal atmopshere, Oklahoma State plus six points?

Couldn't you just hear a deep Santa-like voice saying, as the extra point veered wildly off: Merry Christmas players.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
I just think most coaches are fired prematurely. If a coach is doing a good job...and the people inside the program should know...then let him continue to build. Some obvious situations arise when a coach breaks the rules, or loses control of a team. Fine, fire him. Otherwise, chill out and let him do his job. This is why I get a little testy when people criticize the Sooner staff. They are one of the best (if not the best) in the country. Look at all the coaches that Bob has seen take over other programs...yet he still wins. The man is a winner. He is gonna have a down year from time to time. Book it. Just ride it out. Talking about mistakes coaches make in games is ok...it's fun to chat about it. But any serious criticism of good coaches is just silly. Like I've always said...sometimes the guy calling the plays on the other sideline has a better day. Sometimes the players on the other team play better and make the plays.

I think Nebbish will hang in there, but the OU defense will be the difference.

world picker (6 years ago)
Hey Jeremy, during which century did you last pick against your heroes?
Jeremy (6 years ago)
If I was playing the Pokes, sure I love the extra point miss. I wasn't, so as a Sooner fan I told my brother, "that point is gonna get up beat". It almost did.

How about the role Chris Brown played this season? It turns out that he was definately needed, so pulling his redshirt was a good decision. I know, picker, that you still contend the factor is WHEN they pulled his redshirt. I understand. I just think coaches have a feel for those things, and they new he was gonna be a factor down the stretch.

And my goodness, is OU loaded for the future. Talk about talent at the RB position and the OL and on defense and at WR...ok, I'll stop. Just notice, I left out QB!! You'd think some very highly touted QB would love to run this Sooner show for the next 4 years. Maybe that Nichols kid (elite 11 QB committed to Mich St.) will take notice.

Jeremy (6 years ago)
I took the Pokes +6 man. If you mean str8 up, I'm pretty sure I took Mizzou to win outright.

Heroes. Funny. I'm a fan. Nothing more, nothing less.

Jeremy (6 years ago)
By the way...my record vs yourself stands at 8-2-2 (or something like that). how many weeks we got left? I need a new recliner.
world picker (6 years ago)
When OU went ahead 26-14, we'd have gone for two, the point being, what's the difference in being ahead 26-14 or 27-14.

Chris (6 years ago)
I see many people are predicting TU will go to the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. I feel sorry for them. I would rather go to no bowl than one in Fort Worth. Unfortunately, C-USA doesn't have a lot of prime locations. New Orleans and Memphis are the best, followed by Mobile, which has a nice proximity to the Pensacola area.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
I agree with you on that. My brother and I discussed that as well during the game. I think going for two in the first half to chase a point is silly. Waiting until the 4th qtr is sometimes too late...you may not see the endzone again. We agreed that they shoulda gone for 2 in that scenario.
world picker (6 years ago)
I think we just bonded Jeremy.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
You know, stranger things have happened...

Now, keep it rolling and agree with me that OU will defeat the Shuckers by 10 at Arrowhead...

Jeremy (6 years ago)
Here's a Monday lean in the pros: I'll take the Giants to "upset" the Cowboys at home this weekend. It's that reversal of fortune thing in the NFL...
world picker (6 years ago)
If the Giants win, they'll have the tiebreaker with Dallas......talk about a big game.....

W.G.Smith (6 years ago)
Chris, you stated "And if coaches were fired for down years, where would Joe Paterno be now?" Bad example, sport. Before the turn of the century, ol' Joe only had one losing season (1988) in 36 years. So, even if the old duffer coughed up a couple after 2000, it'd be awfully difficult to scrap him. And regarding Coker, the guy stepped into a milieu where winning immediately and consistently was a sine-qua-non for the position. Coker, like the picker stated, is a nice guy and we all know what happens to nice guys without that Machiavellian streak, don't we? Especially in the shark infested waters of college football. Coker simply won with other coaches' recruits and stumbled with his own, while allowing a university that already suffered from serious image problems to encounter more of them. Would Coker have been fired over the FIU disgrace had his team been 11-0? What do you think?
Chris (6 years ago)
W.G., I think I didn't convey clearly what I was saying. Joe Pa should be at Penn State until he wants to be, as far as I'm concerned. And I've heard there have been boosters grumbling about the need for a new coach. I say to them "shut up." Just because Joe Pa had a few down years recently, doesn't mean he should be fired. His performance last year showed that ups can come after downs. Now maybe picking a legendary coach isn't the best example, but I hope that clears up what I was saying.
W.G. Smith (6 years ago)
Gotcha, Chris. I just couldn't resist picking at you a bit. I will concede that the profession is cold-blooded; Earl Bruce's first Ohio State team went 11-1-0 after which his teams posted six consecutive 9-3-0 years followed by one 10-3 year only to be fired the next season after leading his team to a 6-4-1 mark. Willingham at Notre Dame is another fine example of an excellent coach not being given a chance. On the other side of the coin, had the Kansas State fathers not granted Bill Snyder a vote of confidence after his first two seasons (1-10-0 and 5-6), the Miracle in Manhattan would have never had a chance to materialize. It's an odd, unpredictable business.
Chris (6 years ago)
Then you look at a guy like Dave Rader at TU, who started off hot then cooled and chilled and eventually became frozen, yet the school stuck with it. Really? What took them so long? At least they learned and were fast on the trigger for Burns. I think that doomed Phillips in basketball too.
TAB (6 years ago)
I just read something pretty funny at collegefootballgazette.com Someones writing a parody about Mack Brown called Ida Maes Longhorn Football Corner. I think its worth a look.
