What's in a name?

Oklahoma's annual media/fan day will be here before we know it (Aug. 3), and on that morning we will know for sure whether or not the Sooners decided to return names to the back of their jerseys. Seeing as how players wore names in the Red-White Spring Game last April, it's a near-lock they'll return for the 2007 season.
So how about we recongnize OU's '06 anonymity one last time, with this gem pulled from a recent blog by one of my favorite writers, Brian Davis of the Dallas Morning News:
"Oklahoma fans have already clinched the award for wackiest uniform argument. Last year, it was reported that coach Bob Stoops ordered the equipment manager to strip the names off the back of all jerseys after the Rhett Bomar fiasco. Said he wanted to build a more 'team-first' atmosphere. Well, in all reality, the new Nike jerseys had a small nameplate area on the back. The letters used for the nameplates were too small and looked wimpy, the equipment manager told me last summer. So OU didn't put the names on. But the Stoops story sounded better to the masses, so that's what they stuck with."
