What's next at QB for OSU?

Oklahoma State backup quarterback Clint Chelf got an opportunity to play and performed admirably, hitting 16-of-27 passes for 233 yards in less than one half of duty against third-ranked Kansas State.

OSU head coach Mike Gundy and offensive coordinator Todd Monken complimented Chelf, who directed three scoring drives after taking over for injured Wes Lunt early in the third quarter.

But what happens next?

OSU has been snakebitten at the quarterback position. Lunt started three games before sustained knee and ankle injuries that caused him to miss three games. J.W. Walsh started three games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Something happened to Lunt during the K-State game that led to concussion-type symptoms. Head coach Mike Gundy answered a question about Lunt by saying he does not talk about injuries.

If Lunt is unable to play in a home game next week against West Virginia, then Chelf will make his first career start.

Monken said he was disappointed in OSU’s 44-30 loss, but he said he was happy that Chelf got an opportunity. Added Monken, “There is probably a good chance he will have another opportunity.”

That’s not a definitive answer, by the way, on who will play QB next Saturday for the Cowboys.

“We’ll have to see,” Monken said. “But I know this. We know one of our quarterbacks for sure won’t be back and we had one knocked out of this game. So I don’t know moving forward. We’ll have to see tomorrow and then see on Tuesday.”

Gundy said Chelf did well and was pleased with what the junior quarterback accomplished on short notice.

Chelf was asked how he played and said this: “We lost the game, so obviously not good enough. My job is to go in there and help the team win the game and we didn’t. You turn the ball over that many times on the road against the No. 2 team in the country, that’s how it’s going to go.”

Chelf said he is “extremely prepared” if he has to start against West Virginia. “I came to Oklahoma State for these opportunities to play like this and I’ll be ready.”
