Where Are We?

On the Sunday night sports Blitz show seen on KOTV in Tulsa, the hosts rate the top stories of the day.

Sunday, the top two sports stories were listed in this order:

2. The LPGA SemGroup Championship final in Tulsa.

1. Some ex-OU golfer won a men's tournament over possibly the worst field in PGA history.

This is as close to speechless as I have been in some while.

The LPGA tournament was exciting. Guess what else: IT WAS LOCAL!

The PGA tournament was a boring joke, and it was played halfway across the country.

Granted, when it comes to TV, most people understand that in these-here parts, it is all OU all the time.

But listing a great local pro golf tournament second in importance to a nothing tournament way over there is sports judgement that leaves you wondering: Are they trying?

Remember, Picker... when the OU Media Mafia come for you, it will be two men... they will be looking at a newspaper or something, giving them a good reason to walk close together... then, just after they pass you, one will place the chloroform pad across your nose and mouth, while the other grabs your legs. They'll both lift you into a van with a sliding door, which will speed away...

And then Dean will take you to Oak Tree to play with Traber and Eschback.

Remember, you've been warned.

Kim was one of the youngest to ever win a PGA event, plus he has local ties.

If this is all you've got to rag on on a May Sunday, you're reaching.

I'd tell you your act is tired, but I'm too tired.

Try a new angle. The "bash everything" and see what sticks schtick is old.

Hmm, buess I wasn't so tired after all.

Judgment is something foreign to Channel 6. One only need to watch Travis take up the entire TV screen for hours on end during prime time, when a small corner box would suffice, or better yet, a screen crawl.

I agree, the LPGA was a great local event and should have been given more
coverage by all media.

A better question might be: why cover golf at all? I mean - it's GOLF. Golf is.... Sorry, nodded off for a minute.

Is this supposed to be a sports column, or the TV forum? What's next, movie reviews?

The problem is that the "Sports Blitz" isn't a "local" program. Oh sure, they have John Holcombe on there so they can throw a bone to Tulsa and describe it as the OKLAHOMA Sports Blitz... but the show has NEVER originated from Tulsa. It's really the Oklahoma CITY Sports Blitz.

And we all know who/what is king in OKC. Anything Sooner-related ALWAYS leads without question. That's what happens when 95% of your electronic media are on the payroll of the Sooners.

That's also the reason why TULSA is the market that continually sees its fine sports jounalists move on to big-time national gigs... because their sole reason for getting hired wasn't "former OU athlete" or "OU alumni" or "son of big OU donor" etc.

In the Daily Oklahoman, the headline reads, "Is Kim the next Tiger Woods?"

I am not joking here, the Oklahoman is serious with this title.

Comical.

Jeff,
For the record the Blitz orginated in OKC around 2000 with Bill Teegins when he was at channel 9. So, Blevins is the one who brought Tulsa into the equation and made it the state wide blitz. It makes sense to originate in OKC as it is the larger TV market and is broadcast to the majority of the state.

To your point about Tulsa's local talent going national, give me an example. I know of one which was Dare Noca (don't think I spelled that correct). He was awesome and is doing a great job on ESPN news.

I know of a one big one from OKC. Chris Harrison was a sports anchor on Channel 9 in the late 90's early 00's prior to starting his own production company and hosting the bachelor and several other national cable programs.

Interesting debate, but I will note several OKC re-treads are now in Tulsa. Jeff Lazalear, Dan the weather man on 2, the dude from FOX in the morning, and several others. All took a promotion from minor positions in OKC to move to Tulsa. Dan was the weekend anchor in OKC and the FOX guy who is the morning host did weekend sports for the ABC affiliate in OKC.

Hate Blevins if you will, but he was pretty big nationally with ABC in the 90's for college football. I think he started as a sideline reporter then covered games as an analyst for the Pac 10.

Traber also did radio in phoenix and was on the diamondbacks tv team.

Here's a big OU question: How about that baseball team!

Too often the OKC-led Blitz treats Tulsa and this part of the state like Guymon.

JDG, here's a few Tulsa guys who moved on to bigger markets. I'm forgetting some I know, but these came to me w/in about 30 seconds. There's more I"m sure..

Picker,
I think you are taking it a little personal. The same could be said about the Tulsa media.
Why does the World refuse to write columns with an opionon on the Sonics relocation?
Why do you run AP stories originated out of Seattle that argues or supports the Seattle argument and paints OKC in a neagative light vs any opionion from the Oklahoma perspective?
Why was the Hornets coverage left to the back page fo your paper and at the tail end of the nightly sports on TV?
Why has the Worlds coverage in general been non existant during the NBA vote on OKC and David Sterns visit to OKC?

The answer is simple. The vast majority of the Tulsa market are bitter and don't like to hear about OKC's progress or you simply don't care. Your market dictates that.

When you look at the viewing audience for the Blitz regarding the state as a whole, I don't think many new or cared about the LPGA event in Tulsa.

Lastly, it is ladies golf!!!! How many of the viewers state wide actually new the event was occuring in Tulsa? I can tell you the Oklahoman ran fantastic coverage of the event all weekend. Did the world do the same of the Senior Event in Edmond last year? Nope. I actually believe you the Picker were very critical of the Senior event and stated nobody cares!!!

I could go on and on.

I know the Blitz is a state wide show and you would think they would lead with the local event. But Kim played locally and I believe more people in the viewing audience were interested in that.

I think it speaks volumes about the quality of the Tulsa media when you the picker who is so critical of the Blitz obviously watch it regularly.

What level of coverage did channel 2 and 8 give to the event?
Billy (5 years ago)
OMG JDG, you are RIGHT ON! Well done.
Jeff (5 years ago)
JDG - Take a look at Billy's list...

As noted, Tulsa has a long tradition of sending sports broadcasters on to big, national gigs like ESPN and Fox Sports.

OKC sports broadcasters have a long tradition of doing remotes from Big Red Sports and Imports and being one of the seemingly endless parade of hangers-on on the OU sideline.

As for the Oklahoma Sports Blitz, please don't give Dean Blevins any credit for making the show statewide... it wasn't "his decision"... it was a business decision by Griffin Communications, which owns both KOTV in Tulsa and KWTV in OKC. It was a cost-saving/revenue-generating measure -- instead of producing two Sunday night sports highlight shows, they produce one and get bigger ad revenue by having a statewide audience.

I don't think they should ALWAYS originate from Tulsa, but it's ridiculous to call it the "Oklahoma" Sports Blitz when they mostly ignore TU and ORU and the show ALWAYS originates from OKC.

JDG (5 years ago)
Jeff,
My point was is that the Blitz concept originated in OKC. They same set design and format were being used in OKC all the way back to 2000. Did channel 6 in Tulsa run a similar format prior to the new blitz?

Your argument again is based on nothing other than your perception without investigation to support your claim about OKC sports journalist. Any market that includes Ruben Diaz, Chris Plank, and Al Jerkins should give you an idea why so many bail from Tulsa to other jobs.

I will dig and give you an inclusive list of OKC media who have gone on to National gigs for comparison sake. I think you will find it to be very comparable.

Thanks again for showing and supporting my continued claims that Tulsans have a major attitude and inferiority complex! Do your research then make your claim.
Chris (5 years ago)
JDG,

Tulsa inferior? Nah, you just got an NBA team. That is cool, I am happy for you guys. Now, fill the seats on a constant basis and I will think it was a good move.

Tulsa and OKC are completely different cities. How can Tulsa be jealous of OKC? I don't understand that point. Because of the Sonics? Ha. I think it is cool, but I am not envious because you got a pro team. How many of you OKC guys will go to more then 2 games once the season starts?

Finally, I am waiting for your OKC list of anchors who have moved on to national prominence. I am sure they have some, just like Tulsa.

But you act like OKC is so dominant, event in famous anchors. So, who is jealous? Just a question.
Chris (5 years ago)
Any market that includes Al E., Traber and Deano the Beano should also not have much room to talk.

Pretty sure those dudes can't even see any other color besides crimson. Funny you talk about the TW being biased. Have you ever read the Daily O?

What is wrong with you? Is there something I can do to help you feel better?

Chris,
Never said OKC was dominant. Just tired of everyone in Tulsa acting like they are on a different level in terms of culture, class, and etc than OKC. Again you support that by your claims. I lived in both places for sometime and their are more similarities than differences. Yet most Tulsans act as though everyone makes 500K a year and spends every ounce of spare time at the museum. Its kind of like everyone from Tulsa has a lot of pride and are attached to their own perception of Tulsa at the expense of OKC, when they themselves do not fit that same perception. Make sense? Simply put, Tulsa has more than its fair share of low income and lower middle class as determined by household income and not so clean nice areas and more thant it's share of negatives. But as I have spoken to people or read posts, they all act as thown they are George Kaiser and live in a mansion in Midtown or South Tulsa. It may be a form of Civic Pride, but it comes across as arrogant and lacking class.

Look to see the Tulsan was the first one to rattle off a list of names (only 1 I have heard of) that are big time nationally and imply that Tulsa is a bastion of sports journalism and OKC are a bunch of hacks. I could care less. I just think it is funny Tulsans all seem to operate using that same mentality. His statement was assuming OKC didn't or coudln't possibly have as many because OKC media sucks and tulsa is better. That argument would hold water if he had even a clue about the history of OKC media and could support with facts and not opinion.

You assume the people of OKC didn't support and attend the hornets games. In fact they averaged over 18K a game and were in the leagues top 10 of attendance. You like everyone from Tulsa is waiting/hoping the team will fail.

(Sure you are going to make the point that tickets were given away to fill seats) - NOT TRUE- they sold more thant 12K in season tickets at standard NBA prices and utilized a similar pricing structure to smaller market teams- That is FACT. Again assumption and opinion not supported by fact on your part.

I don't think any city is jealous of the other. I just think they should be proud of each other and their accomplishments.

Point in fact. How often do we see a negative comment about OKC, negative article in the Tulsa world, Urban Tulsa and other media outlets that paint OKC in a negative light? Answer: Regularly. Sure you get the infrequent that a boy, but buy in large it is mostly negative.

On the other hand, I read regular complemntary articles about Tulsa in the Daily Oklahoman and Oklahoma Gazette that takes pride in Tulsa and is proud that they are a part of our state. I have never read a negative article about Tulsa in either one of those publications.

In my time in Tulsa, Tulsans look down on OKC and the state as a whole and feel they are something more or better and do not seem to take pride in the state. I believe that attitude has permiated amongst our local leadership and is the main reason why are city has failed to progress the last 30 years. Until that is changed, our future looks like much of the same.

Working on the list, will post later.

I wonder if JDG took his spelling and grammar classes in Oklahoma City?
Emeril (5 years ago)
It's been said that salting a steak before cooking will make it tough. This isn't true. Salt doesn't make steak tough...poverty does. A nice marinade bath administered hours before grilling can often make even the most inexpensive cut of meat a delicious and tender treat. Bam.
MIKE (5 years ago)
Emeril makes a good point. If you are going to argue amongst yourselves, try to stay on the topic at hand. If you are in OKC and have a beef with Tulsa or vice versa, save it for a blog that pertains to that subject matter. Also, can we keep the soapbox speeches under 1000 words? These are comments, people. If you want to write articles, apply for the job.

KOTV IS IN TULSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When there is great local news here, we deserve appropriate coverage.

NOT AN EX-OU GOLFER WINS A HACK TOURNAMENT WHEN THE WOMEN PROS ARE IN TOWN!

Here's the question. Since the Blitz combo makes no apologizies about loving anything OU does, is the OU coverage on that Sunday night package the best around? Most times, probably. It is certainly the most loving.

Lots of OU football is a good thing in football season. It's just that the other Oklahoma City stuff is for the birds.

Wouldn't it be nice to see somebody with the Picker's objectivity on the tube? Viewers might learn something.

Picker, Picker, Picker.

Maybe the Sports Blitz ran the Kim victory as its lead story because it happened on their network. The ladies' event was shown on ESPN. Just because it was local doesn't automatically make it better, or more important, or make me care, or make me want to know anything about it. Compare the two: network TV vs. cable TV. Obviously, the Anthony Kim win has more significance nationally than the SemGroup. The SemGroup is a run-of-the-mill women's golf tourney, regardless of what the John Q. Hammons, Octagon, or SemGroup people want to think.

Had Scott Verplank won the Wachovia, the coverage by the blitz would have been the same.

And as to your assertion the field was weak, Mr. Picker, who was left out? Tiger - because he's recovering from surgery. Had he been well, he'd have been there. The Wachovia is a bigger deal than the SemGroup. Tiger was the defending champ. He plays few tournaments each year, but that's one of the non-majors he plays. Other than Tiger, who else needs to be beaten for it to be a good win? Phil? He was there. Sergio? He was there. Remember...the guy's only 22. He beat a decent field (not strong, not weak) and became an instant millionaire. Creamer won $270K. Kim's winnings were not that far off of the total purse of the SemGroup ($1.2 mil and $1.8 mil, respectively).

You're just trying anything possible to rile up OU fan. It ain't working, chump. You said a few weeks back that the OU baseball program was in the pits. My response was - "Who cares?"

So let's play your game, shall we? What has happened to the Oklahoma State University women's softball program? A program with alumni of the magnitude of Michelle Smith should never be in the current state it's in.

Now, how ridiculous does that sound?
