Who Cares?
Published:

1. Does anybody in Tulsa care about the Oklahoma City Chaw, the new NBA team?
Yeah. Some. But the extent of the affection will depend on OKC's sportsmanship.
If Chaw owner Clay Bennett thinks he can throws a worthless pre-season exhibition our way and expect regular caravans to OKC, he may as well court Guymon.
With our great new BOK building, The Hubcap, we should get a regular-season game a month.
The clowns in Edmond and Norman who think they're big-league by association are getting a little uppity.
You want our help, throw us a steak, not a bone.
2. Does anybody care about the Olympics?
Maybe.
The time-delays with NBC pretending that something that happened a day and a half ago is live will be absurd.
I can't swim, maybe that's why the pool action seems distant.
Track, you catch up with every four years.
The whole system is about as amateur-like as NASCAR.
So we'll keep this keen mind open.
Mostly here's what's good about the Olympics: football is next up.

Thumbs down for the picker

Good ole Picker always Mr. Negative. Yes, I'll drive down the Turner to see NBA games and enjoy the great restraurants in Bricktown.

Yep, he is at it again. The picker keeps fueling the hatred for OKC ...and sport radio personalities down there. Just thought I would throw that in since the picker does in each of his articles/blogs. Believe me the people in OKC could care less about what is going on up here in Tulsa. Just be happy that Oklahoma has a major league team, it is the closest thing Tulsa will ever have to a team. And yes, I know plenty of people here in Tulsa that will drive down for games. I put my name on the list the first day.

I'm glad a few people up there in Tulsa agree that the Picker has a pole up his a**. OKC doesn't owe Tulsa any regular season games. The OKC franchise will do just fine playing all 41 home games at the Ford Center. They will receive statewide support regardless. I'm sure more than a few Tulsans will make the trip down the turnpike for some games this coming season.
Edmond and Norman residents may not be paying taxes to fund the Ford Center improvements but they are still part of greater-OKC and they will still be well represented at the OKC TBA's home games. If not for the combined 179,471 residents of Edmond and Norman being part of greater-OKC, then the state of Oklahoma wouldn't have a prayer for any pro sports franchise. Like it or not, they are big league by association. I lived in West Los Angeles for three and half years and occasionally would drive down to Anaheim for Angels and Ducks games. Norman/Edmond to downtown OKC is nothing compared to West LA to Anaheim in either distance, or in time.
Picker, it is pretty obvious you hate OKC but remember this is a good thing for the entire state of Oklahoma (Tulsa included). Thankfully, most people seem to agree. If you want to make fun of any pro basketball team in Oklahoma, it should be that minor league team up there In Tulsa. They are OKC's new D-League affiliate, btw.

No one knows what the impact will be, but we all hope it's positive. It's hard to imagine any significant company thinking of relocating would use that as tiebreaker. As for bringing more business to the area, a major NASCAR event would trump that.
If it were a pro football or baseball team I would be more impressed.
Bet all of you would be too....!

Give OKC enough time and they will screw this NBA thing up too. Once the new wears off of this team, they will be headed north to Kansas City. I give them 3 years at best.
Juiced up proffesional athletes in the Olympics.... Not What It Used To Be!!
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES??
Not Anymore.
World Picker

OK, you win, it's time to get positive, go ahead and send us your stinking exhibition game up the pike.
We plan to support the Oklahoma City Chaw NBA team, just as long as somebody great is in town on the other team that night.
In related news, perhaps you have noticed that the Eagles will open The Hubcap, the great new sports and entertainment building downtown.
The mayor came on the TV and said her first choice was Garth Brooks.
So in other words, we got the second choice that also opened Oklahoma City's Ford Center back in the day; and probably opened some shopping centers and gas stations in between.
In sports vernacular, signing the second choice, and copying Oklahoma City, is the equivalent of a fielder's choice ground out.

Perhaps the Eagles weren't the second choice - maybe the Eagles AND Garth Brooks were both sought after, and the Eagles was the better deal financially. Either way, dogging the Eagles is uncalled for! I'll be there with bells on (whatever the heck that means)!
stogdiddy

and....the Eagles opening up shopping centers and gas stations??? get real! That's equivalent to the Picker writing for the New York Times. No offense, but let's be real here Mr. Pick 'em.
Eric

Come on now picker....i usually love your blogs but this one is nonsense....Doggn' the Eagles!?!? Are you kidding me??
Alden

The Eagles are one-half of the original band. Just like Lynrd Skynrd. Maybe they can fill the Arena with people not aware of this. Lynrd Sknrd count not fill the place, but makes better music.
Don't knock the Olympics. Six dorks and I have an Olympic fantasy track and field competition which requires hours of watching the Olympics Cable Channel and keeping detailed records of all the possible finalists. We are planning sushi and Sierra Mist parties every night. I think JuJu Mobandy from the Gold Coast will win the 100 meter dash. Do you think this was a good pick? I have four weeks to trade him if you don't.

Write for the New York Times?
You must be kidding. The Picker passed that level long ago.
The Eagles opened the Ford Center.
We have to copy OKC?
If you miss the Eagles here, you can catch them at the opening of the Rec Center in Sheboygan.

Alden: Thank you very much for being worldly.
Sometimes people around here get to acting a little remote.
Phantom of the Opera just played one month in this city! Phantom was big when, last century?
I listened to the Eagles' new album last night. Ouch.
stogdiddy

Can't disagree with you Picker about their new album, I wish it wasn't so. But their classics will have my butt planted right their in "the hubcap"!
World Picker
The new place looks just like a Dodge Flipper hubcap.
Wonder what they'll spend a week on Windex?
As regards these 30-year old groups, technically it should be the Beach Boy, right? Singular? Doesn't that one guy make the tour rounds? The Eagles are barely plural when it comes or the original group. This is the new wing of the Hotel California, people, keep it real.

Who sucks worse, the Eagles or Huey Lewis?
World Picker
Maybe it's the Philadelphia Eagles.
I'd go see them punt it around sooner than I'd go to Granny's Night Out.
In more upbeat news, USA Today ran all the college football schedules this morning.
Kansas once again is about the only team trying a Kansas State schedule; never has worked, never will, doesn't prepare you for the toughness to come.
Texas and OU have perfect schedules, a big-name non-conference softie each, Wash and Ark.
That game should be for a BCS spot.
Missouri at Nebraska could be memorable.
Tennessee has a monster schedule.
The Big Ten should be banned from a title game for five years for being too slow.
bjorn2run
Slower than the Big 12 Champs looked in their bowl game?
World Picker
The Big Ten is clearly the flop of the nation recently.
Ohio State was not competitive in the last two title games. Michigan was an embarrassment. Penn State is lost. It's hard to believe that one area could have a specific problem, like being slow, but look at the facts.
Proof that the Big Ten is on the major skids is that Big Ten people would rather talk about OU's shortcomings.

Hey dicker, I live in Norman- how big a feller are you.
tell you what, if you promise not to go, I'll see what I can do about getting some regular season games at the bok.
Geezz, I think some games should be played in Tulsa, but you're starting to sour me to the idea.
World Picker
Hey Edgar, after about ten straight 120-88 losses, you'll be begging for some high-class Tulsa fans to bail out the worst team in NBA history.

The BOK Arena does not look like a giant hubcap so much as it does a giant screw wrapped in duct tape.
It's second-ugliest arena I've ever seen, right behind Memphis' Pyramid. And that's ugly.

Out Pick The Picker
The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
