Who would you rather have, Danny Manning, Larry Brown or Barry Hinson?

So who hired the better man off Bill Self's bench -- Tulsa, SMU or Southern Illinois?

ESPN is reporting that former NCAA and NBA coach Larry Brown, 71, has agreed to terms with the Mustangs. You can read the story here.

Brown, who has a close relationship with current Kansas coach Bill Self, was the first person off the Jayhawks' bus when they disembarked in New Orleans for this year's NCAA Final Four.

Brown hasn't coached since 2010, hasn't coached in college since 1988 and will be making his 14th stop as a head coach -- including one school, Davidson, where he never coached a game.

But there are reportedly at least 1.75 million reasons SMU has a chance to score Brown, who sports both NCAA and NBA championship rings.

ESPN is reporting that Brown is trying to convince former Tulsa assistant and current Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich to come with him to Dallas as "coach-in-waiting."

Jankovich was a candidate for the Tulsa job, and by my estimation, a pretty good one.

At the same time Brown and SMU seem close to coming to an agreement, both Hinson and Manning are assembling their staffs.

The World's Mike Brown reported Tuesday that top Oral Roberts assistant Tom Hankins is leaving the school to join Hinson at Southern Illinois (take a look at the story here).

On Monday, Booker T. Washington boys basketball coach Shea Seals resigned from his post, presumably to join Danny Manning's staff at Tulsa (See Bill Haisten's story here).

Seals' hire is a step in the right direction for Manning. It allows this staff to embrace the school's history in a way the previous regime was uncomfortable doing.

But Manning is still one good hire short of assembling the type of staff TU fans should be happy with.

While Larry Brown's reported staff at SMU would be a bastion of experience, Manning's features more green than a St. Patrick's Day parade.

Between Manning and his three announced assistants -- Steve Woodberry, Brett Ballard and Justin Bauman -- there is 15 years of Division I coaching experience. That's 23 less years than Larry Brown has been a head coach.

(Read about Manning's staff here).

Manning could really use a mentor on his bench, someone with Division I head coaching experience to help guide him through the pitfalls he'll surely experience in the weeks and months to come.

He could use some one like... I don't know... Larry Brown or Barry Hinson.

Unfortunately for Manning, those two are already taken.
