Why Is OU Crushing OSU at Sports?
Published: 1/27/2009 4:07 PM
Last Modified: 1/27/2009 4:07 PM

Didn't Oklahoma State used to be competitive in, well, SOMETHING important?

Football, rout.

Basketball, only a slight contest in Stillwater.

Heavily favored in women's basketball.

Better in wrestling, of all things.

OU could actually have the player of the year in the three major sports, which is astounding.

Maybe it's time for the athletic department at OSU to leave accounting to the accountants, or to nature, to the natural high of winning, and get back to finding some players.

Ok Picker, I'll bite. But only to make you eat at least some of your words.

First of all, OU has ALWAYS been dominate in football...nothing new there. BUT OSU is finally coming up to challenge regardless of what some OU homers will say.

Secondly, OSU is in Year 1 of basketball with a new coach with a TOTALLY different style of play. What did you or anyone expect? An immediate turn-around with a Final Four appearance?

Third, I believe OSU women's hoops actually did better than OU last year and made it further in the NCAA tourney. Again though, OU has always been dominate in this as well so it is not as if OSU is underachieving by any means. Two years ago they were at the bottom of the Big 12 and the last two years they have been ranked throughout the season...not too bad.

I have no reasoning for wrestling other than it's on a down year which happens to every university sport at some point of time.

So there ya go Picker, you are 1 for 4...way to impress us all with your non-factual pot stirring. I have to go watch paint dry now.

I tried telling you before but you wouldn't believe me. It's the Holder factor.

It's brought a curse to a once fine athletic program.

Mike :
1) Football - OU hands down, up and coming must mean you are happy that OSU consistently beat the cupcakes the last couple of years with no hickups. Competitve yes - but middle of the pack in the South still.
2) OSU struggled the last 2years with Sean so really you are on year 3.
3) Yes - Andrea Riley willed (and punched and hit and cheap shotted) her team to some victories last year. But not so much consistancy this year. Also it was 2 years in a row If I remember the line was something like "0-16 to the Sweet 16"
4) OSU is sliding in wrestling and you should be concerned. That is where all your Natl Championships come from after all. How many straight had OU lost in Bedlam? Yeah that is what I thought it was in the high teens.

Nice ... dude your 0 fer 4. Thank Holder & Pickens the next time his jet flies by.

T. Boone gave all that money to OSU. Is there some quality that just cannot be bought?
Jim (4 years ago)
Enjoy it while it lasts.

Next year will be back to normal with the bedlam trophy back in Stillwater.

#1 in empty seats ?
PK (4 years ago)
Hmm i think we know who Mike roots for....... quit crying cuz your school is gettin manhandled by two OU's this year.... Quack Quack
Mike (4 years ago)
JJ, you make it so easy it's almost comical.

1st, I am happy OSU is winning the games they are supposed to win. Aren't you happy that OU always does that? Oh wait...Well anyway, I agree that OSU is still in the middle of the pack; hence why I said "coming up." As in, not there yet. Should I slow down for you?

2nd, let me repeat: "1st year with a NEW coach AND a totally NEW style of basketball." Regardless of the Sutton era, these are still the facts. It's a very new system and should not be expected to thrive right away.

3rd, let's not get into a character debate regarding women's basketball players. Ok, Mr. Plumley?

4th, I already conceded the point on OSU wrestling. But in true Sooner fashion, you come through exhibiting that classiness only a Sooner fan could.

I'd say you were 0 "fer" 4 except you have to actually get off the bench to play. I doubt you are in that category.
Have That (4 years ago)
O State wrestling is down this year...sorry we have only won 4 national titles in the last 6 years...but if anyone out there actually thinks we will be down for long they are sadly mistaken. one of the all time greatest recruting classes coming in and the dominance will return quickly.

pokes are getting better in football...but no...we aren't as good as OU...we don't have the program, the history, the fan base, or the winning record. but, we are getting better.

basketball has hit a rough patch these past couple years...however I think Ford has our guys going in the right direction and he will continue to make steps to improve the program.

women's sports don't count...sorry. Men don't argue over women's sports...men also don't argue over what nail polish goes with what purse. if you're that type of dude then feel free to head down to your spa or hair salon and discuss it with whoever you want there.

Golf...well...is this even a question? the OU golf team couldn't properly caddy OSU.

Baseball...OU has only beaten OSU once in the last 3 years in the regular season...

so...picker...while I agree with you on some things, there is a whole Paul Harvey "rest of the story" that you have left out.
Mike (4 years ago)
PK, I hope you aren't a Sooner fan. OSU didn't get manhandled by Oregon. In fact, it was really close. And if that's what you call being manhandled, what do you call your loss to Florida? Or to West Virginia, or to USC, or to etc...

Oh, lets hear the textbook response of "Hyuck, hyuck, at least we get der, hyuck hyuck...boomer!"

How I love that one! On second thought, skip that. Just go make my burger.

Down years can happen in any sport, to any athletic program. Since we are on the OSU vs. OU debate, I will point out one year period where the exact opposite was true: in 1997-98, OSU went 1-0 in football, 2-0 in Mens BBall, 2-0 in Womens BBall, and my wrestling research didn't go back that far, but I'd be willing to bet, history as my guide, that OSU went 1-0. I know it was over 10 years ago, but my point is, down years can happen to anyone. What say you Picker?
Have That (4 years ago)
Beavis...

OSU went 2-0 vs. OU that year...combined score of 57-12
Beavis (4 years ago)
Perfect. If only I had placed that bet that I mentioned...

I guess after that year, according to the Picker, OU's athletic department turned over it's accounting to nature (whatever the heck that means).
Fair Fan (4 years ago)
Picker,

Did you watch the OU-OSU football game ? "Rout" ? it was in doubt until the 5 min mark of the 4th quarter.

How about the basketball game ? Non-competitive ? With a few minutes left it was a one possession game.

If OU had the Bedlam Trophy for the past 10 years then maybe your blog would make sense. But check your facts. It's been pretty even (or really in OSU's favor).
World Picker (4 years ago)
It simply seems like all anybody talks about anymore, concerning OSU sports, is seats. Build seats, sell seats, fill seats, empty seats.

It might be time to redirect focus to the field.

Step up. Make a play. Win a big game.

The celebration of coming close, anybody can do that.

PS: What about Gundy calling option plays at the end of the bowl game with the qb having a hurt shoulder?

stogdiddy (4 years ago)
Picker, the majority of folks who obsess with the seats is fans of opposing teams, and Mike Holder. It is Holder's job to fill seats, so that is more than acceptable that he talk about. As far as opposing fans: Bash OSU's historical lack of success in football - fine, bash capacity and attendance - LAME!!!

And....Gundy can't diagnose a dislocated shoulder during game time no more Bob Stoops could diagnose Bradford's broken fingers, during game time. Neither are doctors, nor are they paid to be. If the player says "I'm fine coach" and there aren't any bones bulging from their skin, any coach is going to put the kid back in the game.

You're really reaching today Picker.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Stogdiddy, guess what, as long as running options with an injured quarterback in a lost case is ok, well, it'll happen again.

What was the last big game OSU won at anything?

The hoop game that got them into the final four five years ago, right?

It just seems that the focus should be on winning something important now and again.,
Stogdiddy (4 years ago)
Are you suggesting that OSU is not focused on winning anything big? That's ridiculous! Two teams meet on a field, one will win. Are you saying the loser lacks in focus, in any event, no matter what the sport? Can it not be that both teams are focused, but the winner is simply better than the loser? Holder hired a young upcoming coach in Travis Ford, with the goal of winning championships. Ford even said in his first press conference that he came to OSU because he could win championships here. Are you saying that this is no longer the case, and all he's worried about now is "Build seats, sell seats, fill seats, empty seats.." The Football players wore bracelets signifying the goal of winning a Big XII Championship. Are you saying that was a cover-up for the players' real goals of "Build seats, sell seats, fill seats, empty seats." We're obviously not there yet as far as the Champtionships and Big Games, in either sport, but I assure you the goals and focus are in place.

By the way, OSU B-Ball won the Big XII tourney the year following the final four run. If your saying that a Big XII Championship victory wasn't a big game, then you must also concede the same for OU, because they too haven't won a big game out of conference in about the same time frame (not in Football, not in Basketball, not in Wrestling). Reach, reach, reach.

I do enjoy being engrossed in conversation with you so keep reaching, Mr. Picker.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this just in: Lance Armstrong wins Tour de France 7 years running (or was it six), meanwhile thousands of other riders finish with ZERO FOCUS ON WINNING!
Mike (4 years ago)
The Picker has been put in his place.

He cannot defend his first argument so he switches to another.

He then is defeated in that one as well.

I guess since you have lost so soundly, you have lost your focus as well. I suppose your interest is no longer winning arguments, but instead, filling your blog up with comments. How ironic...

Maybe it's time for you to redirect your focus.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Somebody honk when OSU wins a big game.
Stogdiddy (4 years ago)
The news according to Picker:

BREAKING NEWS: University of Florida wins BCS National Championship!

IN RELATED NEWS: 118 FBS Teams, other than Florida, win ZERO big games and have ZERO focus on winning said games.

Have That (4 years ago)
so picker...whats your arguement now...that OU is better than OSU or that OSU doesn't win big games?

because it seems like you have given up on the original premise of your posting

I mean...what has OU done lately besides fold like a lawn chair in bowl games and consistantly make the big 12 look bad? have yall won another gymnastics title that you want to waive around or something? I mean, if thats what you want to brag about I'll put it this way: it must be real hard to win a national title in something when theres only like 7 other schools in the country that even have teams...go twirl around & dance all you want...gymnastics isn't a sport.

other then that...I cant think of squat that OU has done...lost to texas 3 of the last 4 years...back doored your way into some big 12 titles in football and got to play some inferior big 12 north teams...woopteedoo...

OSU beat Missiouri too...and we did it at their house, when they were actually playing good...not at the end of the year when they had given up. and in neutral stadium.

like I said in my previous post...sorry we have only won 4 of the last 6 national titles in wrestling...sorry if that isn't good enough. we will be back on top soon and OU will just go back to being bent over and made to look a fool on the mat like they have for years and years and years and years...

I'm suprised title 9 hasn't eleminated the OU wreslting program to bring in syncornized swimming or something.

stick to an arguement picker...don't back out of your statements and dont try to change the subject.

World Picker (4 years ago)
Have That: The point is not what OU is doing overall. But it does seem to be doing really well in all sports. The point was to raise the question as to whether or not OSU has really slipped recently, mostly in head to head competition with OU, but across the board, as well.
stogdiddy (4 years ago)
If that is your point, then let's make it fair/valid and throw Mens B-Ball out of the argument. Here's why: OU Jeff Capel in his first year went 11-8 after 19 games. OSU Travis Ford after 19 games in his first year is 13-6. I don't know if you'll be able to handle this though, maybe it's too objective for you.
Jeremy (4 years ago)
"It just seems that the focus should be on winning something important now and again"

Seriously? How many "important" games has OU won recently in anything? OU-UT? BCS? You're laughable.

Ostate on the other hand has raised some banners in the past 5 years.
