Why Is Venables Still at OU?

Almost every time a head coaching job opens around here, OU's Venables is thought to have a chance.

But even K-State picked somebody else two coaches back.

Perhaps the OU man is waiting for a better opportunity.

In this day and age, maybe it's the offensive people like former TU coach Gus getting all the attention.

Who knows, perhaps it has been the people running loose in OU's secondary in select big games in recent years.

Pick:
Big Game Bob's defensive guru has more Big 12 Conference Championship rings than all the other coaches in the conference combined. Remember, you play to win the game, and evidently Venable's defense is better than the opposing team.
Oh by the way, how did K-state hire from two coaches turn out?

Then why is he still there?

There are pictures circulating of Venables and J.Edgar.

Gomer Jones, Merv Johnson, and Brent Venables were/are all great "second bananas" at OU. Of the three, only Gomer had the opportunity to become a head coach and that didn't work out well for him or for OU.

Who says that a great coordinator has to become a head coach? I'm pretty sure that Venables earns more than the average OU English professor and he appears to have a secure job for so long as Bob Stoops remains the head coach at OU. As Atticus already pointed out, Venables has been highly successful and is appreciated by real Sooner fans and more importantly, by his fellow coaches and by his players.

Maybe Venables doesnt want to coach against Bob.

Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe(and I know he has applied but who knows if he backed out or whatever) that he might just to stay right where hes at and do what hes doing? Let's see: he lives in a nice town great for raising a family, he is coaching big time football and in charge of the defense, and he makes a GREAT living to the tune of about $400k/year. Not everyone has to be 'the MAN' and make 4 million...lots of people would be happy makin that and coaching at OU.

A major school young-ish coordinator who doesn't want a major coaching job?

OK.

Or maybe Venable has never been picked to be anyones Head football coach!

It's VenableS and you may be right but for it to be portrayed as OU is settling to have him or he is a failure since he's still a coordinator is ridiculous. As stated, $400k/year is a pretty decent living in Norman, OK...

Not sure how OU has kept Coach V. for all these years after all of those busted defensive assignments.
