Why Mike Stoops?
Published: 1/9/2012 2:08 PM

It's a simple question, with no editorializing intended, one way or the other.

Besides hitting winners, the Picks has been strong in two major reform cases recently, one, requesting that Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy please quit calling plays and focus on team management, and two, will somebody please do something about OU's pass defense.

Gundy immediately stopped calling plays. The rest is good history in the making.

And, despite outcry from the cheerleaders and homers, we have long been the lone voice calling for defensive change at OU. And look what happened. Assistant Martinez will apparently be thrown under the freight train. And defensive coordinator Venables is being pushed under an active volcano.

Say Mike Stoops was named Mr. Smith. Would OU go after a failed Arizona coach whose defense couldn't stop walking traffic?

No.

So Mikes Stoops will be hired because he is Bob's brother?

Okay. Fine. Just so we all know.

Pick - Didn't you read all the OKC papers and ou messages boards. Mike Stoops is the next best thing to Tim Tebow. He is going to bring ou to the Promised Land!!

Just like at Arizona?

Exactly!

My favorite football has a squeaker in it.

Picker, you do a good job of exposing Mike Stoops. Wish you would apply your all-seeing eye to Sittler-gate. Is there a TW ban on the subject?
The Picker (last year)
FB, we just work here. There's no ban. Everybody says things they didn't mean to be broadcast. It's up to those involved to decide how to handle it.

Pick isn't exposing Mike Stoops. He's exposing an OU system that is settling for mediocrity and choosing unabashed favoritism over sound coaching choices. The OU system is broken and so is the team.

I'm psyched for Mike.
I guess we will all have to wait and see how it works out though. Mike didn't have OU quality players at Arizona and U of A is notorious for their poor facilities compared to other Pac-12 schools. You don't get as good of athletes, your usually not going to win. I don't why the NCAA won't switch to the footballs with squeakers in them to broaden the fan base.

I am psyched for Mike too- its like a combo of Bob Knight and Woody Hayes minus the ability to win! Mike Stoops will make Schmidt look tame. Psycho Circus - BRING IT!
The Truth Hurts (last year)
Why Mike Stoops? Because Bob is stubborn as a government mule. Its the only change he's even halfway willing to make.

I cant say I disagree really but some coaches are just better Coordinators than Head Coaches. Maybe Mike Stoops just didnt belong as a head coach and will perform well again as a coordinator. Whats your thoughts on that Picker?
Razor1911 (last year)
No. I don't believe that Bob would consider hiring Mike if his name wasn't Stoops. That last name is what makes the difference, and it's not because of nepotism. IMO, Bob and Mike have a relationship that just "works" together. You see what happened to the two of them when they weren't working together. From the outside looking in (which is what ALL of us are doing - including the Picker), it appears that Mike is Bob's sounding board, his confidant. Mike also brought fire to that D, and since he left, there have been very few "firey" performances. (One that immediately comes to mind is the 2007 Big XII CCG against Mizzou, but I digress...) That D needs some discipline and some fire that Venables wasn't able to consistently supply. As an alum and lifelong fan, I think it's worth a shot.

If bro Mike hadn't succeeded here (Razor1911 said it best) the nepotism charge might hold water. Get Mike in here. He knows the organization, he knows defense, and can recruit in this area. whats not to like?

Picker, Obviously your memory is shorter than your....well, anyway. Here's a refresher:

In Mike Stoops' 5 yrs as DC for the Sooners they were ranked 39th, 8th, 4th, 10th, and 3rd in Total Defense in FBS. They won a national championship, they finished in the top 10 4 out of 5 years, he was a finalist for AFCA Asst. Coach of the Year. There's much more, but I think you're picking up what I'm laying down.

Is he the answer now? Who knows? Is he a better DC than head coach? Probably. Does someone here write their column, ignoring obvious facts and previous successes, just so the story appears to validate his predisposed notion? Definitely.

Is this how far you've fallen? I guess we'll see...

You forgot to include that none of the Big 12 were running spread offenses during those "glory" years.....

John Nash (last year)
Well, except Tech. Oh, and Kansas. And OSU the last year or so. Obviously, the numbers show they were fairly decent at stopping whatever offense(s) was/were run against them.

Is your argument that he was only a good DC because teams didn't run the spread offense then? That makes as much sense as saying he can't coach defense because he was a lousy head coach, even though when he did coach defense, those defenses were pretty good.

hootie (last year)
Actually only Tech was running it. Mangino was in his first year at KU (so you can MAYBE count that) OSU was still running Miles offense which was more of a pro style and not spread. It is harder for good D coordinators to stop a spread O on a consistent basis. I do not think Stoops will be able to get OUs D to like it once was.

Great point by DJ. Some coaches make great offensive or defensive coaches, but lousy head coaches.

Let's get to The Meat & Potatoes of the situation: When Mike Stoops had the PLAYERS (OU personel), he was successful. He didn't have the same quality of players at Arizona. I'm off the mic.

Anybody reading these comments must be spinning like a top.

BUT... will Mike be content as a second banana after being the star? Is he just marking time until a head coaching opp comes his way?
The Picker (last year)
Another job?

At what, drill sgt?
MexiMike (last year)
If his name was Mr. Smith and was the defensive coordinator for a national championship team at one time, yeah, I'd say teams like OU would be interested in him.

Also, sometimes coaches simply make better coordinators than head coaches. There's a lot more on your plate when you're the head guy. Look at Wade Phillips for example. Horrible head coach and yet made the Houston Texans (of all teams) one of the best defenses in the NFL in a single year.
colhi64 (last year)
A good example of a great defensive coach making .a lousy head coach was right there at good ol' OU. Anyone remember Gomer Jones?? Great defensive coach, replaced Bud and took a national championship quality team to something like a 6-4 record. I say give Mike a chance, they had good defenses when he was there before. Some kids need yelled at. This past team sure needed it.
JG78 (last year)
So, is Urban Meyer at Ohio State a moron for offering him $1 million a year to be defensive coordinator?
