Will Jermaine Gresham impact Justin Blackmon's choice?

What role, if any, will the Jermaine Gresham factor play in Justin Blackmon’s big decision?

Blackmon, a record-setting receiver at Oklahoma State, said after the Alamo Bowl that he will meet with parents before deciding whether to stay in school or make himself eligible for the NFL Draft.

In an interview that occurred prior to the Alamo Bowl trip, Blackmon was asked about the Gresham factor.

Here’s the connection between Greshman and Blackmon. Both grew up in Ardmore. Their homes were “probably about five miles apart,” acccording to Blackmon.

Blackmon played at Plainview High School. Gresham played at Ardmore High School. Among Gresham’s teammates was Blackmon’s older brother, Warren.

Blackmon, asked about the relationship between himself and Gresham, said, “We know each other. We don’t talk every day, but we are friends.”

Gresham starred as a tight end at the University of Oklahoma and, after an All-America junior season, chose to return to school rather than turn pro. He wrecked a knee before a 2009 season opener and never played a down as a Sooner senior.

Will Blackmon take that into consideration when he makes his choice?

“It won’t make a difference,” he said. “I don’t think it will (impact) my decision. My decision is my decision and I’m just going to make it off me.”

The good news for Gresham is the injury didn’t knock him out of a payday. He was picked 21st overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and agreed to a five-year deal worth $18.55 million.

A different injury could have negated the $18.55 million contract for Gresham. Blackmon would be wise to take the bird in the hand and enter this year's draft.
