Will New Coke be official soft drink of new league?

Here’s what I think is being underestimated: The number of fans (and they do matter, don’t they) who are opposed to the Big 12/Pac-10 marriage.

Sure, you can say those fans are stuck in the past and unwilling to explore fresh ideas.

Let me give you some examples of fresh ideas.

New Coke.

Building a television series around the cavemen in the TV commercials.

Adding the new kid, Seven, to the cast of “Married With Children.” (Or Cousin Oliver to the “Brady Bunch” cast).

Moving Jay Leno’s show to prime time.

Van Halen splitting with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar in favor of lead singer No. 3, Gary Cherone.

Pat Boone making a heavy metal album.

Cutting Keri Russell’s hair on “Felicity.”

Letting the back of your jeans sag below your bottom. (Sorry, that's now an extremely old idea that used to be a fresh idea, but it's way past time for that particular fashion trend to disappear.)

Drilling for oil in the ocean.

Hey, speaking of oceans, let’s have Fonzie jump a shark!
