"Are you serious, coach?" "Yeah, no TV. Again."
Stephen Holman/Tulsa World

Today's disgrace is as follows: television.

Rather the lack of it, when it comes to action involving certain local teams.

Saturday the 9th, Oral Roberts plays basketball at Georgetown. Georgetown was a top ten team. ORU beat Kansas. Yet Saturday's game is not on cable televsion.

A week or so back, ORU played at Tulsa in a virtual sell-out and that wasn't on cable.

Somebody said the possibility exists that not a single Tulsa home game will be on the cable.

What is this, the sticks?

There were more local games on television in the days of outhouses.

It probably has to do with money -- conferences might make $9.95 more going to a satellite operation.

But if a local cable group can't get us a good road game involving a local team, an explanation is required.

Cable must be too busy doing some more of those moronic testimonials from happy viewers who obviously aren't hoop fans.

Great topic.

There is no excuse. Cox is a joke and doesn't care about its customers. Cox: loco like no one else.

How on earth can NO TU HOME GAMES, even sell-outs, not make the cable?

All that other slop that's on, there should be a law.

We see more of Duke and Gonzaga than our local teams, to quote the late Mr. Dangerfield, it's a disgrace, I tell you.

Honestly? It's the deal TU has with CSTV. Cox has remained quiet on the issue, but my understanding is that CSTV wants to be on our system (COX) if Cox is going to broadcast the games -- they own the rights to TU home games.

It's just one of those situations where two corporations can't make a deal and it comes at the expense of the fans (it reminds me of when they quit showing every Cardinals games on local tv for a year or two). I don't think there are any completely innocent parties on this one, but I also think Cox is probably more to blame than others.

I don't think TU-ORU was a near sellout. I'd like to think that, but I think it was closer to 6,800-7,000. Still, it SHOULD have been on tv.

By the way, what do you think of this TU team, oh esteemed Picker? I've been waiting for your take this year and haven't seen much.

Tab: TU is on the way back, no doubt about it.

What did it take, five years?

The destruction of a basketball program is a serious situation -- OU looks like it is where TU was -- and still people love the guy that left the Sooners in a ditch!

People think, hey, get one good player and you'll be back. But why would one good player go to a rotten team that won't be on tv? He won't. You have to grind it out and get lucky with a couple or three borderline recruits who turn out nice.

Getting back is a long and drawn-out ordeal.

The mess a coach can make is long-lasting.

TU was under for three years -- they were in the tourney in 2003. You're right that a coach can do a lot of damage in a short time. I still blame Buzz Light Year for a lot of what happened. He didn't pass on Caleb Green or try to steal his offense from Rice, but he did leave at a really critical time when the program needed to reload and take the next step towards recruiting more national level talent.

TU needs to be on tv more. I think success in CUSA will take care of that, but they also need to play some games on national tv OOC. Also, the Mayor's Cup game should be broadcast regionally. There is a lot of interest in that game stretching from OKC to Springfield, MO. I was shocked when I saw Dean Blevins lament that it was not broadcast.

If that OU PR man said anything about TU, he must have been kidding.

Nobody gives TU less coverage than that CBS Blitz mish-mash.

Sometimes this year, on all the local television channels, TU was the third game-day story!

This is scandalous.

The electronic media is, as a whole, horrific.

Do you mind if I add a parcel to your list of disgraces? Let's add your compatriot Dave Sittler. In today's Sunday World, he listed all the BCS bowls in the "Must See" & "Worth A Look" categories. That includes the Independence Bowl, featuring two 6-6 teams that got fat off teams like the "Little Sisters of The Poor" and "St. Mary's School For The Blind". The Armed Forces Bowl, in which TU will play, was listed in his "Watch If You've Nothing Better To Do" category. Sittler's nose is so far up the OU/OSU posterior that I wouldn't be surprised if he wore his Crimson/Cream or Black/Orange gear around the office. He's a disgrace to the Tulsa World, just as much as the "OU/OSU Blitz" is to local television. He has not an iota of objectivity in his being.

Mr. Bill: We just did a bit today about loving the Poulan Weedeater Bowl because it's the most horrific sporting event in global history!

Picker - I just read it and loved it. I'm looking forward to your "Picks" this week. Should be a riot!!

Bill -- Can you BELIEVE some of those bowl games!

The lack of TU stuff, particularly on TV, is really shocking. One night, the TU football game was the third story on all three television stations.

I heard somebody said a victory over a big-name school like Alabama would be a major accomplishment for OSU in Shrevie. Like nobody gets the news and knows Alabama is a laughing stock.

Bill (6 years ago)
One would think there was some reason Alabama rolled their coach right on out with the tide, wouldn't one? I understand Holcomb gushing over OSU in that bowl, because they own him. No credibility left there. Wolfie does his best to level the field and give TU coverage, but he's not sports director. Big Al is just kind of floundering right now - not sure what's got him all garbled up. Honey Bunds and his crew make one nauseous. Thank goodness we have the TW. You and the TU beat writers and Jimmie Tramel are well worth the price of the paper, even if I have to walk ALL the way down my driveway to pick it up each morning. Is there some "big" paper I can send some Sittler columns to? Kind of like they do in TV to get someone "hired away"?

Bill, you couldn't be more correct, the current local TV gang can't shoot straight.
