Will cost of 'gas' help Oral Roberts basketball team?

If Oral Roberts wins a Saturday home game against McNeese State, credit Central Arkansas’ Jarvis Garner with an assist.

Explanation: McNeese State will play at the Mabee Center less than 48 hours after a game in which coach Dave Simmons said his team “ran out of gas.”

Garner is the guy who siphoned fuel from McNeese State’s tank.

A 6-foot-7 forward who played junior college ball at Connors State, Garner hit 3-pointers at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime period to extend Central Arkansas’ triple-overtime victory Thursday night over McNeese State.

“That first one, it was a prayer and God answered it for us,” Central Arkansas coach Corliss Williamson said.

“It was amazing to see Jarvis knock down that shot, and just to have the guts to step up and want the basketball. In the huddle, he was saying ‘I want the ball coach.’ We got it to him and he came through for us two times.”

Garner matched a career-high with 38 points on 14-of-19 shooting. And, because the game became a marathon, McNeese State’s top seven players averaged 37.9 minutes of court time. Four Cowboys played more than 42 minutes. Two played 50 or more minutes.

Best guess? After traveling from Conway, Ark., to Tulsa, the Cowboys won’t be subjected to a grueling Friday practice.
