Here are the two best blog subjects you could ever hope to find to go with your can of beer.

1. Is Tiger the greatest golfer ever?

1. (a) Is Tiger closer to finished than the greatest?

He is not the greatest ever. Nicklaus is.

As the fabulous Johnny Miller suggested on the tube this weekend, Tiger seems more suited for the cover of Bicep Bi-Monthly than Golf Digest. Golfers need torque, not muscle.

Tiger is so bulked up, he should be playing second base for the Yankees.

He does not appear to be the same after the knee surgery. He seems to favor the knee and is almost disinterested. You and I could drive the ball straighter. I could, anyway.

2. What does the Big 12 do much, much, much worse than any other major conference (and most mid-level conferences)?

The answer is send quarterbacks to the NFL. The Big 12 has no great quarterbacks to the NFL; never has. The Iowa State guy is the best. Colorado's Stewart was before the Big 12. Simms has been fair at best, Vince Young a bust in the making.

Why can't this conference produce a halfway decent NFL quarterback?

Used to be all the high school option stuff.

Now?

Is below average high school quarterback passing the answer?

It must be, because great in-state quarterbacks aren't showing up halfway across the country.

Are the high school coaches too old-fashioned?

Mr. Picker, you can't debate "greatest golfer ever" as there is no means for a valid comparison. Equipment has changed beyond measure, even in the last ten years. Course construction and maintenance is also much improved. By way of example, August National had renovations each of the last five years while each pro basketball court is pretty much the same the last 100 years. Football and baseball fields have the same dimensions since those games were first played. As for your challenge, I would go with Tiger in a straight drive contest. If Tiger were standing beside you going shot for shot, you wouldn't be able to tee the ball much less hit it. Tiger knows he can beat you. You know Tiger can beat you. Tiger knows that you know he can beat you. There is no intimidation factor quite like it.

Gene, I agree with everything said except I don't think you can compare ANY sport great from prior generation to today's. The pro basketball court may be the same but the rules have changed dramatically. Everything from the shot clock to goaltending to lane violations and fouls allowed change how players play the game.

Either way, your actual point about Tiger is aboluteley valid.

Pick, you are right about the Big 12 QB's. Who knows why the conference can't produce more? It seems that coaches recruit QB's that are mainly college style or are purely athletes.

BobDog, I wonder if Pat Jones ever said a correct sentence.

Gene, of course you can compare Tiger and Jack.

Majors won.

Period.

At the moment, Nicklaus has to be considered the greatest ever.

Period, paragraph.

Nicklaus was up against tough guys, Tiger can't beat a bunch of Euros in pastels.

Mr. Picker, since we have an open slate, the Greatest Golfer Ever is Bobby Jones. Will you count the Major Tournaments Tiger has to date and compare that with the number Jack had when he was that age? I like the sound BobDog makes when he snickers.

This is the dumbest of all the pickers blogs so far. You obviously havent attended a 5 or 6A HS football game in the past,oh say, 20 years! 4 and 5 wide sets are the norm and teams are throwing it all over the place. Quit shooting your mouth off about stuff you are just speculating about with no factual basis... Your rationale for no great pro qb's from the Big 12 is like HS parents blaming the coach for little Johnny not getting a scholarship. After all, he was probably all-world in 4th grade Pop Warner...

"Tiger can't beat a bunch of Euros in pastels."

You make it sound as if Tiger is the second coming of Greg Norman! Tiger will most likely go down as the greatest golfer ever.

It's sad when a writer has to make such controversial conversation with absolutely no fact to it in order to boost the amount of readers.

Maybe a name change is in order, Pick.

Do you prefer Jerry Springer or National Enquirer?

Have you pinheads been meeting over a gallon of Ripple to exchange sports ideas?

Who among you wants Tiger over the field to win the Open?

Nicklaus has won more majors than Tiger.

Tiger himself has said that is the ultimate measuring gauge -- who wins the most majors.

So you dufflebags know about Tiger than Tiger knows about himself?

He had knee surgery people.

He looks like he could play linebacker for Oklahoma State.

Nicklaus has more majors and at this point is the best ever.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Pick, who would take ANY single person versus the field to win the open?? If I was forced to pick one person though, yes, it would be Tiger.

Maybe we should slow down for you. He has more majors won NOOOW, than Nicklaus HAAAD at the SAAAME age.

Common sense and rationality aren't for you are they, Pick? Should we first try to put the correct shaped block into the correct shaped hole?
The Picker (4 years ago)
TOTAL MAJORS WON!

TOTAL PANSIES IN THE FIELD!

Come on, Mike, stick to soccer.

There are two Iowa State QB's in the NFL, Seneca Wallace and Sage Rosenfels, and we all know how Iowa State has such a winning tradition. That goes to show you conferences and alma maters aren't that big of a deal.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
