Yet another injury diminishes TU basketball depth

The University of Tulsa basketball team’s depth has taken yet another hit.

Coach Danny Manning confirmed this morning that Rashad Ray, a first-year freshman and the fastest man on the Golden Hurricane roster, has sustained a leg injury and will not play against Missouri State tonight.

Manning did not disclose the nature of Ray’s injury or speculate on how long the 5-foot-11 guard might be out of the lineup. Ray averages 25 minutes and 7.9 points per game (on 45 percent shooting).

Each with a foot injury, sophomore forward Rashad Smith (14.5 points per game) and redshirt freshman forward Brandon Swannegan are sidelined again – for the fourth consecutive game.

For the Missouri State contest, the Hurricane (4-3) will have only two scholarship players – junior guard Tim Peete and freshman forward Zeldric King – in uniform and available as reserves.

During TU’s most impressive victory thus far – a 63-51 win at the University of San Diego on Nov. 16 – Smith played 19 minutes as a starter and Ray got 24 minutes. Swannegan played six minutes. Tonight, they’ll be spectators.

Manning did make a surprising and positive announcement today. For the first time this season, guard Pat Swilling Jr. is expected to be in uniform tonight and should play a few minutes.

A junior-college transfer, Swilling underwent preseason wrist surgery. The post-surgery prognosis was that the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Swilling – the son of former NFL linebacker Pat Swilling – would not play until the start of Conference USA play in January. On Tuesday, Manning offered a revised outlook, saying Swilling would be cleared to play “in the next couple of weeks, I’m hoping.” This morning, Manning said Swilling has gotten a green light from doctors.
