Yo, Adrian, Pass the Barbs

Barbs, as in barbells.

A funny thing happened to Tiger on his way to challenging Jack Nicklaus as best golfer ever: He looks more like a strong safety for the Cowboys than a lilthe and lyrical golfer.

Something is off with Tiger's game -- have the skin-tight tops cut off the circulation to his swing?

Look at the all-time greats, there's not a bicep worth noticing among them all. You don't need muscles to play golf.

His game is such that he has invented a new statistical category, wrong fairways hit in regulation, he's that wild.

He seems somewhat mellow until it's time to flex for the cameras.

Unless he gets back in the flow, he'll have to take his shirt off to be noticed much at Southern Hills.

tiger has definately put on some muscle sense he started which has resulted in a trend which many young golfers now follow by lifting weights and staying in shape. You hear stories of high school golfers going to college and puting on 20 more pounds to start playing. But, with how the game is now played, hit it far as you can and go find it, the muscle definately helps. That being said, there are still plenty of quality golfers who are, well, not what one would call "in shape" which is fine. All that matters is getting it in the hole.

The Muscle Beach approach may work at places like Augusta, where you can hit it a block crookedly and half a wedge to the green, or at the Greater Billy Crystal Open. But Tiger wasn't exactly in jeapordy when he pumped himself up, was he. He was going great. Now he's going sideways.

george (6 years ago)
true, but its harder to keep up with the big boys when you get older. Going sideways? I have to ask are you talking about his driver, or his actually play lately?

Two straight entries on golf? I realize the PGA is nearly here, but, there's gotta be something else to discuss before we drown (or sweat) in golf coverage. Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, and so on are all worth hitting on. For most, golf discussion ends on Tiger, Sergio, Phil, and Daly.

TAB: The British Open is exciting.
Michael Vick is boring.
Barry Bonds is boring.
Any more questions?
George: The weather is supposed to turn rank over the weekend. Tiger may drive one out of Scotland.

I beg to differ: Michael Vick (when he's playing) is pretty entertaining. The Barry Bonds deal, although sad, is high drama -- it's the bitter end of the national past time. Golf is entertaining, I guess -- hard to use the word "exciting" with it. Then again, some consider a trip to Pryor exciting.

Michael Vick is a glorified wishbone quarterback made popular by boneheads like Joe Theisman on ESPN. He has never been able to pass the hat, say nothing of the football. If all he did was own property on which dogs were slaughtered, get him out of here.

At the very least, Barry Bonds is a sourpuss. Get him out of here.

Stephen A. Smith of ESPN is a loud-mouth. Get him out of here.

Here's something that can stay, Missouri football. You see the Big 12 media stole my sleeper pick and tabbed Mo over Nebraska!

I agree he should be tossed if this is true, but he's also an exciting player and in my opinion another guy who wasted his talent (like John Daly, who you posted about). He did get his team to the 2004 NFC championship game and he's fun to watch. I know you don't like the "gazelles" and I echo your apparent disdain for Theisman.

Bonds is also a cheater who gets to wear Robocop armor.

I'm not sold on Mizzou or their QB. They lost to a goofy OU team. I think they would finish 3rd or 4th in CUSA.

Missouri is no sleeper pick. Most people would have them 2nd behind Nebraska, if not at the top. They only return 5 starters on defense...but that could be a good thing! Daniels is the best returning QB in the Big 12, and he has 9 returning starters on offense. The Tigers get NU at home...so they are the pick.

Here's how BAD the Big 12 North is...Baylor went 3-0 against them last season!! Fact: If Missouri's QB Daniels goes down to injury, and NU's new QB doesn't pan out, then you can officially throw a dart to pick the north division champ. As usual, the Big 12 Title goes thru Dallas in early October.

Early lines (my lines) and predictions: 1. Georgia (-15) over OSU. Prediction: OSU will have one of the best offenses in the land. With Georgia only returning 4 starters on defense, the Cowboys lose by only 7 in a high scoring game.

Oklahoma (-10) over Miami, Fl. Prediction: This has got barnburner written all over it. Miami, while down and with a new coach, returns 16 starters. Unlike most early visitors to Norman, the 'Canes will not be at a big talent disadvantage. This is the game that will test the new OU signal caller. I figure the OU coaches will try to run at the 'Canes after mauling North Texas in week 1...but that will not be easy against this defense. If the OU QB doesn't play well here...along with the OU pass defense...it could be an upset. I'll say OU by 8.

Mr. Picker, I find it amusing that in a blog which was directed to golf and one player in particular, the responses lean toward football. Hmmm . . . this must be Oklahoma. Some of your fans need to get a "life."

In respect to the added muscles of Mr. Woods, I call your attention to the stastics they gave this weekend as to club head and ball speed. Mr. Woods had the fastest speed in both categories, by far. They also mentioned that he had the longest drives on the holes where that was measured. While you don't need muscle bulk to play golf, it can't hurt. Is there anyone out there who wouldn't want to be Tiger for just one day to see what its like to play the game the way he does?

Do we still have the Tiger -vs- the Field wager?

Gene...if you are referring to me when you say "some of your readers need to get a life"...then take a hike. It was the picker who opened the football topic in the last sentence of an earlier message ON THIS BLOG.

You see, this is America...where one can basically say/type what one wants to, inside the law of course.

Don't be so freakin' sensative. And BTW...I play/watch a little golf myself, but just chose not to respond to this topic.

You jab...and I'll jab back my friend...

Sorry Gene, some of these on here are real tough guys behind a computer.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Thanks for the input Ben...

Really, the "tough guy behind the computer" is the one who fired the first shot.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
