You Can't Stump Marques Haynes
Published: 6/25/2008 4:08 PM

I wrote a feature piece on former Harlem Globetrotter Marques Haynes that appeared in the Tuesday sports section of the Tulsa World and it's a long story -- 42 inches -- by newspaper standards.
One of the things I left out was my attempt at stumping him. I tried to put the best driibbler in the world on the spot by asking him the identity of the second-best dribbler in the world.
Haynes was quick with an answer.
“He isn’t around right now,” Haynes said in reference to the late Pete Maravich. “He was one of my students. I knew his dad, Press, very well. His dad coached up near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and used to bring Pete down to our games whenever we would come into Pittsburgh to play and he would always sit on the bench with us. Pete was a little fellow, 7 or 8 years old, and we would take him back to the dressing room and pass it back and forth. It just got to be a ritual when the Globetrotters came into Pittsburgh.”
Haynes touched plenty of peoples' lives with the Globetrotters. I had six phone requests for his address when I came into the office today, all from people who were his fans or wanted to thank him for something in the past.
Haynes refused to provide his age for the story. One of the callers said he played golf with Haynes in 1961. He wouldn't give his age then, either.

Great tidbit about Marcus and Maravich. I'd never read that before. Pete was one of my heroes.
