Your Self?
Published: 2/12/2008 3:10 PM
Last Modified: 2/12/2008 3:10 PM

It has happened every spring.

Not a young man's fancy turning to baseball and women.

What has happened every spring is a Bill Self college basketball team flaming out in varying degrees of a meltdown.

In the last three years, KU has been beaten by two Filler B's -- two bracket fillers, Bucknell and Bradley -- then, last year before the Final Four, UCLA.

His Illinois efforts were similarly dumped.

Is there something about the style of ball being coached that lends itself to major, monster upsets?

Is it a lack of pacing, too much pushing?

Too much emphasis on the break, not enough focus on the half-court offense?

No go-to star who can get 35 points?

Is KU getting tired?

Is Self overrated?

Or great?

Can you be great after having superior talent without reaching a Final Four?

One answer: Don't know.

Better answer: Don't care. Your priority should be the disarray of the three state "powerhouses" Self is a quisling to Tulsa. Surely you are not writing this article in fear that Self will wiggle himself back into the fold?

Dont know that losing to Texas AT Austin completing makes a meltdown.

Dont like Bill Self, smug pompous self.

Losing to ORU at Lawrence much bigger issue than losing to Texas.
Allan (5 years ago)
picker-Self has a higher winning% than Roy Williams at the same time at KU.
Gene-thanks for the laugh!
you say "don't care", but take the time to post. And taking the picker to task over this article; i suppose you don;t know that Tulsa and Bartlesville has thousands of KU alumni.

JJ - Don't know if you've ever met Bill Self, but I I've never known of him to be "smug" or "pompous". I went to college with him and he was a good guy then. Later on I introduced my daughter to him and he was as gracious and friendly as ever. I'm not saying you should like him, just don't call him names without justification.

James -

Yes I have met Bill Self on occasions throughout his coaching career. There is nothing wrong with saying he is smug or pompous. You can be friendly & gracious & still be smug. And again, I was defending the coach... the loss to Texas was not a bad loss.
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
Is it realistic to expect any coach to run the table in college basketball, given the number of games played? And then again, Self could be suffering from the same malaise Mack Brown has been battling for the past twenty-five years: great recruiter, moderate to mediocre coach. Who knows? Who cares? After all...it's basketball, not football.

Self has had Final Four talent but no Final Four.

Texas? Didn't OSU about beat Texas? Overrated.

About the in-state teams, what's missing?
Players.

Will coaches ever learn? Look at all the coaches who wish they had never left -- Sampson (got a standing O upon his return to Norman!), Buzz Bomb Peterson, Tubby, Gillespie, Pvt. Second Class Knight, etc.

The grass is seldom greener. Usually the grass is fake.

Getting around to OSU's Sutton, if he's fired after two years, that's a disgrace, games should be boycotted. Three years is another matter.

Picker, you dumbass. OSU lost to Texas.
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
Laugher...Picker clearly stated that OSU 'about' beat Texas...which means that they 'nearly' won (which means lost, in effect). How foolish does that make you look for tossing the scatology around? Reading is an art form...you brush up on it.

And that Sampson could receive a standing 'o' in Norman is disgraceful and inconceivable.

Wonder if Hiram works for the Department of Redundancy Department?
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
No, I don't.
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
I certainly do not.
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
That isn't where I'm employed.

Anyone ever hear of the term 'tautology'?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Hiram: Here's what's really sad.

The people who respond to this site are the best and brightest of all the sports fans hooking up with the World.

Yesterday on the Sports Animal radio show, which is always good for a laugh, two of the Homer of the Year candidates said that they still loved former OU hoop wrecker Calvin Simpson.

OK, I got it: It's a sports term, right? Tautology: The science of pari-mutuel wagering. (But only if the scientist is rigorous, as in taut, with his/her totalizing methodology.)
robin the very brave (5 years ago)
Would anybody like to explain that again and again?
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
Gadzooks...methinks Robin-the-very-Brave actually got it!

Yeah, Picker, the response of the Sports Animal talking heads is disheartening. I spent the afternoon on the phone with a friend in T-Town who is eons more knowledgeable on roundball than I would ever hope or want to be. He's had a bone to pick with Sampson long before Kelvin messed where he sleeps and left for Indiana. And as I've stated in an earlier post, how anyone, anwhere in Oklahoma can think kindly of Sampson is beyond me.

The generosity of sports fans never fails to dazzle me. If I'm correctly interpreting the lead article in today's TW, 74% of Oklahomas polled think Stoops is doing a fine job. Hmmm.... He's getting three million and change and he fields a team that looks like Inola High against Texas Tech and West Virginnie? Heck, I'll do the same job down there for a third of that.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
Hiram Glickman,
Yeah, OSU 'almost' beat Texas. A moral victory I suppose. Of course World Picker says 'moral victories are for losers'.

Kelvin Sampson is the BB coach at Indiana, not OU. So, who cares what folks think of him. Except maybe his agent, or his cell phone company.

You seem to be obsessed with him. Are you related to the World Picker or are you just one of his brown nosing minions?

Stoops gets $3 million; goes to a BCS Bowl with a $17.5 million pay out (5 times). Do the math, nit wit. Brush up on it. It is 2nd grade stuff.

Why don't you turn off the Sports Animal, get your nose out of World Picker's arse, and see what kind of profit Gundy is making for Boone State U. (Actually coaching football of course).

World Picker: you are the only Homer of the Year Canidate who can actually quote Sports Animal. You should win, easily.

Taut. Tout. Pout. Lout. World Picker. See. It's a game. You lose.

To both of you (Hiram and World Picker): Kelvin Sampson is old news. He coaches Indiana University Basketball. Only you two punks and Sports Animal seem to care about him.

(Sound of Bobby Knight laughing his a** off in the background).

World Picker should be fired and divorce Hiram and then Hiram could use his property settlement money to buy the Sports Animal. Problem solved.

GOT HIM!!!

Hey NITWITTER/NITPICKER, look down, your man crush on Bob stOOPS is showing. Guess what, this blog was not an OU/OSU thing. Again, you fell into the Pickers trap. Yes, you do look foolish.
Hiram Glickman (5 years ago)
How amusing. I don't think NIT PICKERS' response worthy of a reply. But I will suggest in a most compassionate way that wonderful things are being done in many mental health facilities; perhaps the Nit Picker should seek counseling if, in fact, he can persuade Lubys to give him enough time off the food service line to do it.

Nit Picker, please don't take your personal and professional frustrations out on my dear responders. It's not our fault that OU won't hire you to crank out odes to Stoops in one of those cheeseball homer publications, Stoops Illustrated, isn't that the one from which you beg for work?

Gene: Are you the horse racing Gene?

Hiram: Calvin Simpson has always been a self-promoting hambone. The true definition of an incoherent homer is one who loves somebody who ruined your basketball program.

PS: If Stoops is such a gold mine, why is the football program lucky to break even?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
