It's usually not good to walk into the office and see that you have voice messages on your phone.
More often than not, a message means that somebody is mad or wants to complain about something, perhaps even some decision that you had nothing to do with (example: why do you guys ignore the Bugtussle football team?)
And then there are occasions when you get a message that makes you feel better about the human race. I got one of those Monday morning. Wayne Williams is a former University of New Orleans basketball player who literally got swamped by Hurricane Katrina and was forced to live on a highway overpass for two or three days.
I wrote about Williams last Friday because he was among people participating in a Tulsa 66ers tryout camp. Williams left me a voice message thanking me for writing the story. How about that?
Williams promised me carte blanche interview access if he makes the 66ers roster. I'm rooting for him to make it.

I'm rooting for him too.

But Tramel, don't you find most young athletes easy to interview? It's the veteran, big money guys that are sometimes tough. That includes some coaches too.

Young athletes often are not appreciative because people have been telling them how great they are since they could first dribble a basketball or throw a football, so they think it is their birthright to be written about. But I certainly get your drift. Older guys tend to be wary because, at some point in their careers, they probably have been "burned" by a media person.

I appreciate the response and hope that all the writers will do that in here. Answering specific questions would make the blog even more interesting.
